East Coast battens down for approaching megastorm

DUCK, N.C. ? A year after being walloped by Hurricane Irene, residents rushed to put away boats, harvest crops and sandbag boardwalks Friday as the Eastern Seaboard braced for a rare megastorm that experts said would cause much greater havoc.

Hurricane Sandy, moving north from the Caribbean, was expected to make landfall Monday night on the Delaware coast, then hit two winter weather systems as it moved inland, creating a hybrid monster storm that could bring nearly a foot of rain, high winds and up to 2 feet of snow.

Experts said the storm would be wider and stronger than last year's Irene, which caused more than $15 billion in damage, and could rival the worst East Coast storm on record.

Officials did not mince words, telling people to be prepared for several days without electricity. Jersey Shore beach towns began issuing voluntary evacuation orders and protecting boardwalks. Atlantic Beach casinos made contingency plans to close, and officials advised residents of flood-prone areas to stay elsewhere or be ready to leave. Airlines said to expect cancellations and waived change fees for passengers who wanted to reschedule.

"Be forewarned," said Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. "Assume that you will be in the midst of flooding conditions, the likes of which you may not have seen at any of the major storms that have occurred over the last 30 years."

Many storm-seasoned residents had not begun to panic. Along North Carolina's fragile Outer Banks, no evacuations had been ordered and ferry service hadn't yet been halted. Plenty of stores remained open and houses still featured Halloween decorations outside, as rain started to roll in.

"I'll never evacuate again," said Lori Hilby, manager of a natural foods market in Duck, N.C., who left her home before Hurricane Irene struck last August. "Whenever I evacuate, I always end up somewhere and they lose power and my house is fine. So I'm always wishing I was home."

After Irene left millions without power, utilities were taking no chances and were lining up extra crews and tree trimmers. Wind threatens to topple power lines, and trees that still have leaves could be weighed down by snow and fall over if the weight becomes too much.

In upstate New York, Richard Ball was plucking carrots, potatoes, beets and other crops from the ground as quickly as possible. He was still reeling from Irene, which scoured away soil, ruined crops and killed livestock last year.

Farmers were moving tractors and other equipment to high ground, and some families pondered moving furniture to upper stories of their homes.

"The fear we have a similar recipe to Irene has really intensified anxieties in town," Ball said Friday.

Sandy, which just left the Bahamas, killed at least 40 people in the Caribbean. Residents from Florida to North Carolina will experience peripheral impacts of the hurricane through the weekend.

As it turns back to the north and northwest and merges with colder air from winter weather systems, the storm is expected to bring snow to West Virginia and farther west into eastern Ohio and southern Pennsylvania. Forecasters were looking at the Delaware shore as the spot the storm would turn inland, bringing 10 inches of rain and extreme storm surges, said Louis Uccellini, environmental prediction director for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Saturn storm cranks the heat WAY up | Bad Astronomy | Discover ...

In late 2010, amateur astronomers discovered a white spot on Saturn ? a gigantic storm forming in its northern hemisphere. The storm grew rapidly, and within weeks had embiggened to an almost unbelievable size, much larger than our entire planet. The winds in Saturn?s atmosphere sheared the storm, pulling it apart while it still raged, and after three months the storm had wrapped completely around the planet, stretched to the ridiculous length of 300,000 km (180,000 miles) ? 3/4 of the distance from the Earth to the Moon!

By mid-2011 the storm had nearly subsided ? its remnants could still be seen in images taken by the Cassini spacecraft orbiting the ringed world ? but the teeth had been taken out of it. Still, there was one surprise left in it.

Observations taken in the infrared by Cassini as well as from Earth show that the storm was not just big and violent, it also formed a vortex (a storm within a storm, if you like) that got hot ? well, hot for frigid Saturn, that is. In the heart of the system, the temperature rose by an incredible 80? Celsius ? a difference in temperature that?s like starting in the depths of winter in Anchorage, Alaska and then going to the height of summer in the Sahara!

The image here [click to encronosenate] is from the Very Large Telescope in Chile, and was taken in the infrared, where the heat in the vortex is fairly obvious. Mind you, it?s not like it was a firestorm: the maximum temperature was still a chilly -150? Celsius, but compared to Saturn?s usual -220 or so degrees, that?s pretty dang hot.

The rise in temperature was unexpected. A 20? rise is about the usual fare for these things, but then, this wasn?t a usual storm. Apparently, this hot spot started as two separate vortices, spawned by the storm seen in visible light, and moving around the planet at slightly different speeds. They eventually merged, forming this one ginormous vortex, which at its biggest was over 62,000 km (38,000 miles) across. Interestingly, it grew to this size around the time the visible storm had faded away.

Like any planet with an active atmosphere, storms on Saturn are common, but one this big had never been seen before. I?d say it was fortunate that we had a spacecraft like Cassini orbiting the planet when the storm erupted, but luck had very little to do with it: it was hard work and dedication that gave us that view. Cassini is such a well-crafted machine that it has operated nearly flawlessly for over eight years orbiting the distant planet. Its design and launch took decades to complete, and it took another seven years just to get to Saturn in the first place.

My point? Luck favors those who are prepared and have planned for rare circumstance. A storm like this one may not happen very often, but we were ready for it by having Cassini there in the first place, and by having a fleet of Earth-based telescopes with their eyes on the sky to support it.

? and having said that, I?ll note an irony: although it was right there, Cassini didn?t discover the storm in the first place. Why not? Because there?s just too damn much to see in the Saturn system! The storm erupted rapidly, and Cassini was busy looking at the rings and moons, so it missed the storm?s genesis. This is not a failure on the part of Cassini or its designers and users: instead, it should be seen as a clarion call for more spacecraft, more explorers in our solar system observing all the myriad worlds.

When I see images and science like this, I am filled with awe and joy, but I?m also struck with an implacable thought: what else are we missing?

SpaceX's Dragon Capsule to Leave Space Station Sunday

The private Dragon spacecraft is set to return to Earth Sunday (Oct. 28), wrapping up the first-ever commercial cargo mission to the International Space Station.

The unmanned Dragon capsule, built by the California-based firm SpaceX, is scheduled to undock from the orbiting lab at 7:55 a.m. EDT (1155 GMT) Sunday, then be released by the station's huge robotic arm about 90 minutes later.

If all goes according to plan, Dragon will splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the California coast at 3:20 p.m EDT (1920 GMT) Sunday, where SpaceX personnel will retrieve it with a crane-equipped boat. You can?watch the Dragon's undocking live on NASA TV here?beginning at 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT).

"In California, SpaceX crew have already headed to the Pacific Ocean splashdown zone to await Dragon?s arrival, while at the station, Expedition 33 crew members are readying Dragon?s return cargo, including biological samples that have been stored in the station?s freezers since the retirement of the space shuttle," SpaceX officials wrote in a mission update Friday (Oct. 26). Dragon launched atop SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket on Oct. 7, kicking off the first of 12 robotic supply flights the company will make for NASA under a $1.6 billion contract. The capsule arrived at the station three days later, delivering 882 pounds (400 kilograms) of supplies and scientific experiments.

Dragon will bring 1,673 pounds (759 kg) of cargo back down to Earth Sunday, including 866 pounds (393 kg) of scientific research gear, NASA officials said.

NASA is looking to American companies such as California-based SpaceX to fill the crew- and cargo-carrying void left by the retirement of the space shuttle fleet in 2011. The agency also signed a $1.9 billion deal with another firm, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp., to make eight unmanned supply flights with its Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft.

SpaceX is also working to develop a manned version of Dragon, in the hopes of winning a NASA contract to ferry astronauts to and from the space station. The company has said it may be ready to carry crews by 2015 or so.

Three other firms ? Sierra Nevada, Boeing and Blue Origin ? have also received NASA funding in the last two years to develop crewed vehicles. NASA hopes at least two of the four companies have manned spaceships up and running by 2017.

At an exclusive ?casino party? last night, Philadelphia-based developer Bart Blatstein unveiled renderings for an enormous $700 million casino concept that could completely reshape North Broad Street, the city?s largest thoroughfare. Speaking at a banquet hall near the headquarters of Tower Investments, Inc., Blatstein?s development firm, he called the project ?an entertainment resort? that would be ?a game-changing development for Philadelphia.?

Philadelphia has only built one of the two casinos allowed by the state after Pennsylvania legalized gambling in 2004. Issuance of a second gaming permit is now being considered by state officials, and has generated substantial interest in spite of a $75 million price tag.

Blatstein is the latest high-profile developer to throw his hat into the ring, with the 120,000-square-foot ?Provence Casino? plan that would transform the former Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News complex. The former offices would house a 125-room hotel and table games, while former loading docks and a parking area would be expanded into additional casino space and a massive commercial area, topped with an extravagant French-themed rooftop ?village? and indoor botanical garden. According to Tower, the project will create 5,300 permanent positions for casino workers, in addition to thousands of temporary construction jobs.

The plan has already raised ire from traditional opponents, like Casino-Free Philadelphia, who say Provence will result in increased gambling addiction and crime. But local architectural advocates and surrounding neighborhood organizations are also studying the impact of early plans from a design standpoint.

The Design Advocacy Group, a coalition of architects that lobbies for higher architectural and planning standards across the city, is concerned that the furor over social consequences of gambling will distract from the very real impacts this development could have on Philadelphia?s urban landscape. Kiki Bolender, chair of the DAG, said that while her group had not taken an official position on the project, she was already concerned with such an unusually large parcel falling under the domain of a single entity.

?It?s a huge amount of property under the control of one owner, for one group?s profit. It?s a very unusual thing in the city,? she said, noting that Blatstein also owns a nearby 300,000-square-foot former office building. That building, a former state office complex, along with the proposed casino site, bookends the city?s sprawling School District headquarters. With district reforms shrinking administrative staff down to only a few hundred, it is not outside the realm of possibility that school officials would seek to offload their outsized offices, giving Blatstein the opportunity to take control of the entire block.

Bolender worried that ?some things of positive civic value would get thrown under the bus? during to the push to develop a singular plan for the megablock. She said that Philadelphia has a poor history of handling mega-developments like Provence, often ending up with designs that look good on paper but feel out of human scale in reality.

Bolender specifically cited street frontage as her primary concern, noting the city block-sized Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the downtown ?Gallery? shopping mall, both billed as giant ?silver bullet? revitalization projects, had scarred surrounding blocks with blank walls and loading docks.

It appears from early renderings that retail would be concentrated on the rooftop-shopping village. Though Bolender dismissed the concept as an attention-grabbing feature that would probably never materialize, she said that similar internalization of retail, a common practice for many casinos, would ultimately harm street life.

?Is [Blatstein] really trying to create a quaint French village that?s within it?s own enclosure? Although he would never admit it? that would mean turning away from Broad Street,? said Bolender.

Others said the proposal, which is at the very least dense and ambitious, reflected the knowledge Blatstein had gained from his past developments. The developer is well known in Philadelphia for his immense ?Piazza at Schmidt?s? development in Northern Liberties. The project originated as a proposal for suburban-style shopping plaza, but was transformed into a dense, mixed-use neighborhood center after intense community opposition forced Blatstein to modify his plans. Ultimately, he and his design team came up with the final iteration that satisfied many residents and is largely credited with cementing the position of Northern Liberties as one of the city?s most desirable neighborhoods.

Matt Ruben, president of the Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association, played a key role in presenting community input to Tower Investments during that development phase of the Piazza. He called the new casino plan ?intriguing,? although he questioned how a French theme would mesh with the surrounding neighborhood.

?If you try to do something that is a revival of any style or tries to look old with new materials, I wonder, ?is that going to look right??? he said.

However, Ruben said that overall, he thinks that Blatstein had learned from his experiences in Northern Liberties.

?The starting point for this project, in terms of design, is way ahead of the Piazza,? he said. ?It?s obvious that he has retained architectural talent and he?s learned from his recent years of doing development.?

Ultimately, of course, the project is based around gambling. Although sanguine on the design elements, Ruben personally opposes casinos and figured prominently in public resistance to Sugarhouse, Philadelphia?s first casino. While he now says that the negative impacts of that casino have been relatively minor, he still called casinos ?the lowest common denominator in taxation,? and said he didn?t think the casino model of economic development was appropriate anywhere.

He recommended that the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, which covers the area where Provence will be located, start organizing.

?From what I understand there is already a coalition forming in that part of town. I think the first thing you have to do is join forces. You have to have a coalition and speak with one voice,? said Ruben, adding he was ?cautiously optimistic? that Mayor Michael Nutter?s administration would play a more involved role in shaping the development in as equitable a way possible.

The Logan Square Neighborhood Association has not taken a position on the Blatstein development at this time.

You had a great run, AFC. But the NFC has taken the torch ? by force. The 2012 season is the year we will remember as when the NFC reclaimed their spot as the league?s best conference.

The NFL is cyclical. When the NFC was the dominant conference, their teams won 13 consecutive Super Bowls (1984-1996 seasons). After the 1997 Denver Broncos broke the dry spell, the AFC won nine of the next 12 Super Bowls.

As is usually the case, the balance of power swung back and stayed with the AFC thanks to superior talent at the two key positions of head coach and quarterback. Bill Belichick found Tom Brady in New England, Tony Dungy was the best coach for Peyton Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger won Super Bowls under Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh.

Those three teams and quarterbacks have started the last nine Super Bowls for the AFC, and 10 of the past 11. They have also been the class of the AFC, enjoying three of the most successful runs in NFL history.

But nothing stays the same forever. All three lost their most recent Super Bowl over the last three seasons, shifting the power back to the NFC and their prolific combinations at coach and quarterback.

Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning have bested Brady and Belichick in two Super Bowls. Two 2006 rookie coaches, Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy, paired up with dominant quarterbacks like Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. They have won the last three championships (four of the last five).

More than just the Super Bowl wins, the NFC has recently been dominating the AFC in the regular season.

Even when the AFC was at its best, 2004 (14-9) and 2006 (12-15), their non-conference record through seven weeks was never as gaudy as the 19-9 (.679) mark the NFC holds this season. It comes after winning the 2011 season series, 33-31, for the first time since the league went to eight divisions in 2002.

Last year appeared to be an aberration for the AFC with Peyton Manning?s neck surgeries derailing the Colts? season. Matt Schaub went down after 10 games in Houston. Philip Rivers? play deteriorated. Ben Roethlisberger had a high-ankle sprain late in the season. Things should have improved this year through healing alone.

But that has not been the case, and it shows up in the marquee match-ups.

• Peyton Manning threw three interceptions in Atlanta (4-0 against the AFC West) on a Monday night game. He has one interception the rest of the season.
• Baltimore?s first loss of the season was to Philadelphia after leading 17-7 at halftime.
• Houston, widely considered the best AFC team, was blown out at home 42-24 by a Green Bay team who came in struggling.
• New England has already lost to Arizona and Seattle.

Teams buried in the NFC playoff race right now could be leading or tied for the lead in certain AFC divisions.

How did the NFC take control?
These changes do not happen overnight. Without much consistent winning, the NFC has used high draft picks to add significant talent since 2007, such as Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, Ndamukong Suh, Clay Matthews, Sam Bradford, Cam Newton, Aldon Smith, Jason Pierre-Paul, Earl Thomas, Julio Jones, and Robert Griffin III.

In that time the NFC has also acquired through trade or free agency former AFC players such as Jared Allen, Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Michael Turner, Marshawn Lynch, Vincent Jackson, Tony Gonzalez, Cortland Finnegan, and Darren Sproles.

• Nine teams this season are averaging over 25.0 points per game, and six are from the NFC.
• Of the 11 teams allowing fewer than 21.0 points per game, nine are from the NFC, including the top four.
• Eight of the 10 teams allowing the most points per game are from the AFC.
• Seven of the top 10 teams in turnover differential are from the NFC.

The NFC only has two teams (at best) with serious quarterback issues. The Eagles already have a successor behind Michael Vick (Nick Foles), while the Cardinals deal with injuries and inconsistencies from John Skelton and Kevin Kolb. St. Louis (Bradford), Carolina (Newton) and Detroit (Stafford) each wish their No. 1 overall pick was playing better right now, but those players are not going anywhere next year.

The AFC could see quarterback changes (this year or next) in Buffalo, New York, Kansas City, while situations with Tennessee, Jacksonville, Oakland and even San Diego are anything but stable. That is seven of the 16 teams.

The five best quarterbacks in the AFC were all drafted in 2004 or earlier. The cupboards have not been properly restocked around the conference, leading to the NFC?s resurgence.

A new research report published online in The FASEB Journal solves the biological mystery of how this happens by showing that low gravity compromises the ability of arteries and veins to constrict normally, inhibiting the proper flow of blood. Prevention and treatment strategies developed for astronauts may also hold promise for elderly populations on Earth who experience orthostatic hypotension more than any other age group.

"The idea of space exploration has been tantalizing the imagination of humans since our early existence. As a scientist, I have had the opportunity to learn that there are many medical challenges associated with travel in a weightless environment, such as orthostatic hypotension, bone loss and the recently recognized visual impairment that occurs in astronauts," said Michael D. Delp, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology, and the Center for Exercise Science at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. "Although I have come to realize that it is unlikely I will ever get to fulfill my childhood dream of flying in space, I take great satisfaction with helping in the discovery of how microgravity alters the human body and how we can minimize these effects, so humans can safely explore the bounds of our universe."

To make this discovery, Delp and colleagues examined arteries and veins from mice housed at Kennedy Space Center in Florida with blood vessels from groups of mice flown on three of the last five space shuttle missions?STS-131, STS-133 and STS-135. Mice flown on the STS-131 and STS-135 missions were tested immediately after returning to Earth, whereas mice from STS-133 were tested one, five and seven days after landing. Not only did they find that these mice experienced the equivalent of orthostatic hypotension in humans, they also discovered that it takes as many as four days in normal gravity before the condition is reversed.

"There has been considerable interest in sending humans to the moon, asteroids, and Mars," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "but what we're finding is that extended space missions have their own inherent risks above and beyond the obvious. If we ever hope to visit distant worlds for extended periods of time?or colonize them permanently?we've got to figure out how to mitigate the effects that low and no gravity has on the body. This report brings us an important step closer to doing just that."

Gaps in border controls are related to alien insect invasions in Europe

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? European countries with gaps in border security surrounding agricultural imports have been invaded by the largest number of exotic insect pests, according to research published Oct 24 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Steven Bacon and colleagues from the Swiss Federal Research Station Agroscope ART and the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

Invasive agricultural pests pose growing environmental and economic problems, threatening biodiversity and costing billions of dollars in economic losses annually. Large volumes of cross-border trade increase the risks of invasion, but the lack of metrics to estimate this risk makes control a challenge.

In the new study, the authors combine global data sets of international agricultural trade with the biology and distribution of invasive insect species to create metrics that can be used to evaluate and improve border controls.

According to the study, known insect pests on many agricultural imports may be frequently undetected by European plant protection authorities. The authors suggest that this leaves European imports vulnerable to pests from countries like the USA, Argentina and Brazil, particularly to insects on large scale commodities such as soybeans, coffee and fruits like bananas, grapes and pineapples, which are the least controlled imports.

According to the authors, these metrics could help quantify the link between invasive insects and international trade. "Developing these metrics enables us to evaluate existing border controls in Europe for the first time. Highlighting gaps in border controls, which relate to insect invasions, gives plant protection authorities the tools to improve biosecurity," says Bacon.

NYC officer arrested in ghoulish kidnap plot

NEW YORK (AP) ? A city police officer was charged Thursday in a ghoulish plot to kidnap and torture women and then cook and eat their body parts.

Gilberto Valle sent numerous emails and other Internet communications about the torture and cannibalism scheme, according to a criminal complaint. He identified and catalogued at least 100 women on his computer, investigators said, but there was no information that anyone was harmed.

"I was thinking of tying her body onto some kind of apparatus ... cook her over low heat, keep her alive as long as possible," Valle allegedly wrote in one exchange in July, the complaint says.

In other online conversations, investigators said, Valle talked about the mechanics of fitting a woman's body into an oven (her legs would have to be bent), said he could make chloroform at home to knock a woman out and discussed how "tasty" one woman looked.

"Her days are numbered," he wrote, according to the complaint.

Valle was to appear in federal court in Manhattan on Thursday afternoon to face charges of kidnapping conspiracy and unauthorized use of law enforcement records. The name of his attorney was not immediately available, and no one answered the door to his home in a quiet, middle-class Queens neighborhood.

A search of Valle's computer found he created records of at least 100 women with their names, addresses and photos, the complaint says. Some of the information came from his unauthorized use of a law enforcement database, authorities said. He claimed, according to the complaint, that he knew many of them.

"The allegations in the complaint really need no description from us," said Mary E. Galligan, acting head of the FBI's New York office. "They speak for themselves. It would be an understatement merely to say Valle's own words and actions were shocking."

There was no immediate response to a message left with the NYPD on Thursday.

Valle met one potential victim over lunch, authorities said.

The complaint alleges that in February, Valle negotiated to kidnap another woman for someone else, writing, "$5,000 and she's all yours."

He told the buyer he was aspiring to be a professional kidnapper, authorities said.

"I think I would rather not get involved in the rape," according to the complaint. "You paid for her. She is all yours, and I don't want to be tempted the next time I abduct a girl."

It says he added: "I will really get off on knocking her out, tying up her hands and bare feet and gagging her. Then she will be stuffed into a large piece of luggage and wheeled out to my van."

Cellphone data revealed that Valle made calls on the block where the woman lives in March, the complaint says. An FBI agent interviewed the woman, who told them that she didn't know him well and was never in her home.

Valle, 28, lives in Queens. He had been assigned to a Manhattan precinct before his suspension on Wednesday.

His Facebook page cultivated the image of a very different man. Postings were filled with photos of a smiling wife, a baby girl and an English bulldog puppy named Dudley. A Maryland football and Yankees fan, Valle had more than 600 Facebook friends, including dozens of young women.

Valle respected his colleagues on the force, took the sergeant's exam and spoke out against Occupy Wall Street, cop killers and others who broke the law, according to the page. His current photo was a blue line, a sign of mourning for when an officer is killed, and expressed condolences for the family of a Nassau County officer who was shot to death this week.

"Keep Nassau County police in your prayers what a brutal week," he wrote earlier this week.

The page was taken down Thursday afternoon.

A man who identified himself as Valle's younger brother but did not give his name told reporters outside the officer's home that he was surprised by the arrest.

"You guys know more than I do," he said.

The Redesigned Games.com Makes It Easier to Play New Games ...

AOL's destination for competitive casual gaming features more than 5,000 games to play. Today a sleek new multi-platform redesign for Games.com makes it much easier for players to find and play them.

The problem with having several thousand web-based games in one spot is giving users a way to sort through and discover them without leaving them overwhelmed. That was a problem with the old Games.com. There was a search box, but if you didn't know what you were searching for it wasn't that helpful. There was a featured games selection, but who chooses those? Certainly not the end user. The new games section was helpful, but did nothing to highlight the older titles on the site.

Games.com general manager John Fox wanted to change all that. During a recent interview he talked about a Games.com that would bring to bear the full power of the AOL brand to attract players while giving independent developers an easy means to publish and monetize their offerings. Back before the days of the world wide web AOL was one of the only online destinations for gaming ? it was America Online, CompuServe or Prodigy. One of those is still around.

But before Games.com can become an even bigger force in the casual gaming space, it has to be more accessible, so here we are.

What's new? For one, the page has been optimized in HTML 5 to conform to any browser window, from a widescreen monitor to your cell phone. Games are displayed in dynamic boxes, flowing about the screen to conform to your view.

Next to the search box at the top of the page there's the arbitrarily picked Game of the Day and the new site's coolest feature, Random Game. Hitting the button shuffles through the entirety of the Games.com library and sends you to a title that, odds being what they are, you probably never heard of. This is easily the most compelling feature of the site ? it's a little addictive.

Finally we've got a bar on the right side that displays your user info, leaderboards, and game suggestions ? recommendations based on the titles you play the most.

It's a pretty drastic change, and it's definitely one for the better. The impenetrable curtain of curious casual titles has parted, giving players looking for a quick fix several options to get into a game and... well, I'd say get out but seeing as the site has an average of 29 minutes per visit, leaving might be a little tough.

And it doesn't look like John Fox plans on making it any easier in the future. The new Games.com is a great place to get a quick casual single or multiplayer fix and an attractive destination for independent developers, and it's only getting better.

A free tool offered by a civil rights group promises to?keep websites free of spam, bots and humans who hate free and equal citizenship regardless of race, color, sex, religion, national origin?or disability. The unfortunate?result:?An alternate-universe analog to a?Cosmo quiz titled ?Are You a Psychopath?? Or maybe the Voight-Kampff test of ?Blade Runner? fame.

Civil Rights CAPTCHA, developed by Civil Rights Defenders, turns those squiggly letters and numbers you must correctly input to gain website access (CAPTCHAs) into three possible responses to an emotionally?charged question about human rights. The user must?choose the ?correct? emotional response from the set of three randomly-generated words supplied. It?s not enough to prove you?re human. You must also prove your humanity. ?

For example:

Civil Rights CAPTCHA was timed to debut just ahead of a now-cancelled?gay and transgender march in Serbia. So, many of the auto-generated responses on the tool?s live example are gay rights-related.

Another example:

Civil Rights Defenders, however, cover other human rights issues the group deals with in?Sweden,?Eastern Europe,?Western Balkans,?Central Asia and Southeast Asia. So there questions reflecting other concerns as well.

The "correct"?answers should be obvious to anyone whose ever?endured a?bastardized version of the Myers-Briggs?Type Indicator required at many a place of employment to ensure sure you're not the type to make off with the company water cooler. It?s noble in concept. If human rights organizations are the majority utilizing Civil Rights CAPTCHA on their websites, it?s also?a the choir preaching to the choir.?

The one case for Civil Rights CAPTCHA is education.

Oppressed citizens in?Serbia and Kosovo are well aware of their circumstances. But as referenced earlier, more than a few United States citizens would be hard-pressed to find Serbia and Kosovo on the map. Get Facebook (where forced group think is a way of life) to institute Civil Rights CAPTCHA on its U.S. servers. Then,?instead of, being asked to identify our?friends in random pictures of their pets when Facebook suspects we're?impostors,?maybe we?ll learn something.?
