Police disperse protesters in Madagascar (AP)

ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar ? Security forces have fired tear gas canisters to disperse a small protest in Madagascar's capital.

The protesters had gathered Tuesday to show support for a former president, Albert Zafy, though municipal authorities had not granted them permission to march.

Zafy, who was president from 1993 to 1996, says, "We succeeded in showing that freedom of expression is not respected."

The Indian Ocean island nation has been ruled since 2009 by a former disc jockey who took power with the military's backing. Coup leader Andry Rajoelina has resisted efforts to restore democracy led by mediators from neighboring countries.
