TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras ? Prosecutors in Honduras say a decomposed, bullet-riddled body found near the border with Nicaragua has been identified as the purported leader of a shadowy Nicaraguan resistance group.
Prosecutors' spokesman Melvin Duarte says relatives of Santos Guadalupe Borge identified him by clothes and a ring he was wearing.
Borge had reportedly gone to Honduras to regroup his offensive against Nicaragua's leftist government. The U.S.-backed "Contra" rebels used Honduran territory in the 1980s.
Known as "Comandante Pablo Negro," Borge reportedly opposed the re-election of President Daniel Ortega despite a constitutional ban on consecutive terms.
Duarte said Friday the body was found Thursday at a ranch near the border.
