If a State?s Holocaust Memorial Includes a Jewish Star, Does It Violate Church/State Separation?

Daniel Libeskind is the son of Holocaust survivors and he was thrilled to be selected as a finalist to construct a Holocaust memorial that would be displayed on the grounds of the Ohio Statehouse. His eventual submission featured the story of an Auschwitz survivor told on two giant tablets? with a Star of David in the negative space between them:

Proposed Holocaust Memorial (via Daniel Libeskind)

The monument would mostly be paid for with private donations (worth approximately $2,000,000) but the state would kick in about $300,000 for the preparation of the site.

This whole thing raised a very interesting question: Why did Ohio need a Holocaust memorial?

Indeed, Republican State Senator Richard Finan opposed it because he said it just wasn?t necessary. In fact, he basically argued that the memorial was approved because no one wanted to be labeled as anti-Semitic or against the Holocaust. But his concerns were primarily economic (why is the state paying for this at all?) and traditional (no other state had a Holocaust memorial like this and Ohio?s grounds honored war heroes):

?A Holocaust memorial does not fit with the historical markers of the State house? Our statues are all about Ohio?s civil war generals? I do not think a statue or monument to the Holocaust belongs in the Statehouse. There are other more viable places it could be put.?

That last sentence is very relevant ? this memorial could easily go up in so many other privately-owned places in the city. So why must it go up on government grounds?

Meanwhile, the Freedom From Religion Foundation has a very different concern: Is this memorial Constitutional?

The corollary to that, of course, is: How do you oppose a memorial like this without coming off as disrespectful?

Last month, they wrote a letter to Finan, who was also chair of the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board, urging him to put a stop to the memorial (PDF). They did their best to walk a line of respect:

Even if the symbol is viewed in the context of a memorial honoring victims of an atrocious genocide, it ignores the fact that there were other victims of the Holocaust. Thus, it gives the impression that only the Jewish victims of the Holocaust are being honored by the state? There were five million non-Jewish victims of the Holocaust, including Jehovah?s Witnesses, Roma Gypsies, resisters to the Nazi regime, Catholic priests and Christian pastors, homosexuals, the disabled, and Africans who were brought to Germany following World War I. If the memorial included only a pink triangle, it would appear to honor homosexual victims of the Holocaust above all others. Similarly, including the Star of David so prominently in the planned Memorial is exclusionary, ignoring the sacrifices made by the many other groups targeted by the Nazis during World War II. A reasonable observer could conclude that the government only cares about the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, not Christian, nonreligious, or other non-Jewish victims.

?

FFRF would like to emphasize that we have no objection to the State hosting a memorial to honor victims of the Holocaust and Ohioan veterans who helped liberate Nazi concentration camps. FFRF?s own membership includes veterans of World War II and Holocaust survivors. Our contention is that memorials designated by state governments, particularly anything displayed at the seat of state government, should remain free from sectarian religious imagery.

Indeed, the two runners-up, Jaume Plensa and Ann Hamilton, created memorials that didn?t include a Jewish symbol but honored victims nonetheless:

Jaume Plensa?s submitted design (Neal C. Lauron ? Columbus Dispatch)

Ann Hamilton?s submitted design (Neal C. Lauron ? Columbus Dispatch)

Today, over FFRF?s objections and Finan?s opposition, the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Committee approved Libeskind?s design (the one with the Star of David). Finan was the sole dissenter in an 8-1 vote, and he announced his resignation from the board.

This is one of those battles that atheists have be very careful about fighting. It?s like American Atheists going after the cross in the 9/11 Memorial ? their fight wasn?t anti-Christian or anti-remembering-9/11. It was purely against the idea of a government memorial treating a Christian symbol as more important than symbols of non-Christians. (We can discuss the merits of that case, but that was their argument.)

I agree with FFRF here in principle but the execution has to be done very carefully. Even when the memorial honors something well worth remembering, legislators must respect the law in the process. That?s all FFRF is asking for. The precedent such a memorial would set would be equally disturbing, possibly leading to more religious memorials in other states ? does anyone think Bible Belt legislators wouldn?t try to erect Christian memorials in their own states after seeing how this played out?

Now that the memorial is going to go up, a lawsuit could be forthcoming. FFRF wouldn?t be wrong to file one, even if the press pilloried them for it.

    Israel condemns EU settlements move

    Israel condemns EU settlements move

    July 16, 2013 - 17:08 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - Israel has condemned new European Union guidelines banning EU funding of projects in territories occupied by Israel since the 1967 Middle East war, BBC News reported.

From 2014, such agreements with Israel will exclude East Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights.

Israeli minister Silvan Shalom said the measure was a "big mistake" which cast doubt on the EU's impartiality in the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi welcomed it as a "significant move".

Under the guidelines, which come into effect on Friday, Israeli projects applying for EU funding will be required to sign a clause to state that it will not apply to the occupied territories.

Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank and Gaza, with a capital in East Jerusalem.

About 500,000 Jews live in more than 100 settlements built in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The settlements are considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.

Peace talks stalled in 2010 over the issue of Israeli settlements. Palestinians are demanding a freeze on building in settlements as a pre-condition to return to talks, while Israel says talks should resume unconditionally.

    freaky veggies

    MSM Now

It might be wise to steer clear of vegetables from Japan?s Fukushima area for, oh, say a few hundred years.

A Korean website assembled this image collection of produce from towns and villages surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. And they are NOT pretty pictures. From Siamese-twinned corn cobs to what can only be called peaches with elephantiasis, the region?s agriculture appears to have taken a heavy radiation hit from the nuclear disaster in 2011. It?s not clear yet what effect eating the produce might have on the population, but you never know. It could be pretty dangerous, but you never know ? in an ideal world, maybe it could give you superpowers. [Source]

OECD: Unemployment to stay high next year

PARIS (AP) ? Unemployment levels in the world's advanced economies could improve next year, even though the number of people without work will likely continue to rise in several European countries, a leading international economic body said Tuesday.

In a report published Tuesday, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development predicted that the jobless rate for the countries that use the euro would rise from 12.2 percent to 12.3 percent by the end of next year. Many countries, like Greece, Spain and Portugal will see a much sharper increase as their economies struggle to recover.

But good news is on the way for some countries. For the 34-country OECD, unemployment is projected to fall slightly next year from 8 percent to 7.8 percent. The United States could see its unemployment rate fall from 7.6 percent to 6.7 percent, while Germany's could drop from 5.3 to 4.7 percent.

The OECD says young people and low-skilled workers have borne the brunt of high unemployment.

"The social scars of the crisis are far from being healed," the organization's secretary-general, Angel Gurria, said. "Many of our countries continue to struggle with high and persistent unemployment, particularly among youth."

In some countries, the youth unemployment rate is double the overall figure, as young people struggle to even enter the job market at the most basic level.

The report warned that many people who have been out of work for a long period are now facing the possibility of losing their unemployment insurance and having to shift to less generous benefits. In many countries, even unemployment benefits are not what they used to be, as many governments have been forced to make big cuts to public spending; the report said average spending per jobseeker in the OECD has fallen around 20 percent since the crisis began.

The report said there are no quick fixes to unemployment, only the slow work of making labor market reforms. It praised countries like Greece, Italy and Spain that have made such reforms, introduced as part of efforts to tackle their debt problems and turn round their economies.

It also cautioned against falling back on offers of early retirement in the hopes of combatting unemployment, noting that the trend of older workers staying in their jobs longer hasn't seemed to have an adverse effect on young people.

"Bringing back early retirement schemes or relaxing rules for disability or unemployment benefits for older workers would be a costly mistake," the report said.

a new opinion in Motors about Asda 5W40 Fully Synthetic Motor Oil

I have been taking a lot more notice of the oil I am putting into my car and although I recently reviewed Castrol's 5W-40 oil which is amazing, I have also come across Asda's own brand which to be honest is just as good and a lot cheaper. I do normally like to pay a bit more for the best but for a few pounds more Asda were giving me 4 litres more of oil which cannot be missed, especially with me doing a lot more motorway driving now and having to be safe rather than sorry. I checked my oil at the weekend which I usually monitor every month and it was half full so I needed to buy more oil and a few people I know have been using Asda's own oil and when I saw the value, I had to buy it too.

    PACKAGING

This oil is quite easy to spot, it is in the motor aisle of Asda and it comes in a big gold bottle which is a metallic gold and on the front it has a label saying '5W40 Fully Synthetic Motor Oil' this is in bold type and under this is the Asda logo. There is a handle at the top corner which makes it a lot easier to hold this as it is quite heavy otherwise, also on the side of the bottle is a level which is clear and you can see how many litres are left as they are marked to show you. There are warnings on the back of this bottle and also directions of how to use it and further information about the product which is all very useful, it does stand out and doesn't look poor quality.

ASDA 5W40 FULLY SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL

This oil comes with a few warnings before using it, it states that it may cause long term damage in the aquatic environment and also may produce an allergic reaction. It should be kept out of reach of children and if swallowed you should seek medical advice, also wear goggles if there is a risk of splashing and when using the oil do not drink or smoke, you should always wash hands after use. This oil has been created for use on the latest high performance petrol and diesel engines that require a low viscosity oil. It gives maximum performance for cold starts to high temperature driving. It also states that it gives outstanding engine cleanliness and protection.

Getting all of those facts out of the way, I drive a Peugeot 207 petrol car so this is perfect for it, you should check with your manufacturer handbook first before using on your car as it should say which oil is right for your vehicle. Once you know this is right for you, you can begin to use it, at first when opening this the lid is screwed on tight, once the seal is broken there is a foil layer over the top of the bottle. You just need to pull this off and you can start to use the oil, it is a thick dark colour like all oil and you need to check the dip stick first to see if you need to top oil up. If so, you just need to pour in a good amount and keep checking the oil levels as you do not want to over fill it.

The oil has been fine in my car and I haven't found myself needing to top this up too often which is good. If you are not sure what the 5W40 stands for, the first number is the oil's thickness at cold start up and the second number is the thickness at engine operating temperature which is quite useful to know. After a few months and if you are on the motorway daily like I am, your oil may need a top up but it is always good to maintain and after topping up my oil I still found myself with over 4 litres of oil left in my bottle which to me is great and it is handy having the litre gauge as at least this way you know what you have left in the bottle.

Having used this product and the Castrol oil, I have to say that I have found this to be just as good as Castrol, I haven't had any issues with this one at all and it has been great. It is good to have in the boot in case of any emergencies and I feel happier knowing I have it in case it goes down quicker than expected. The oil is quite difficult to pour in at first when really full as it is so heavy to lift but once you have used a bit, it is easier to tip in as I felt I had more control over pouring. I definitely will be buying this Asda oil again but my 5 litre bottle is still going strong and for what I have paid it has definitely been very good value.

    COST

You can buy this 5 litre bottle of 5W40 full synthetic motor oil for ?20 at Asda which is great as Castrol charge ?37 and that is for only 4 litres so Asda are definitely doing a competitive rate here.

The official Asda website is http://www.asda.com/.

China Yuchai Gets a New President

Following the abrupt resignation of director and President Benny H. Goh on May 27, China Yuchai International (NYSE: CYD??) has been operating with an interim officer, Kok Ho Leong,?who also held the position of CFO while a replacement was found.

The heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturer announced today that board director Weng Ming Hoh was appointed to serve as president effective July 17. Hoh previously served as the company?s CFO and acting president, and with his assumption of his new position, Leong will relinquish his role as acting president.

The brief announcement made at the time of Goh?s resignation indicated simply that he was leaving the company effective May 1 to ?pursue other opportunities.? Although the company wished him well in his new endeavor, it?s an unusual turn of events for a company, as most wish for an orderly transition process. However, China Yuchai?s stock has risen nearly 9% since Goh?s resignation.

Puig & Pirates, Homer & Harper highlight 1st half

NEW YORK (AP) ? Just for fun, let's turn back the baseball clock a few months.

A well-rested Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals are destined to face Josh Hamilton and the Los Angeles Angels in the World Series. The Houston Astros have the best record in baseball. Manny Ramirez is playing in Taiwan. And no one is quite sure how to pronounce the name of this Puig guy.

Well, a few things are still the same: Homer Bailey is pitching no-hitters, Miguel Cabrera swings the most devastating bat in the majors and, well, the drug cloud isn't going away anytime soon.

As the All-Star game approaches next week at Citi Field, a look at the first half of the season:

    ___

    EXTRA! EXTRA!

By the time Matt Harvey and the New York Mets let the hovering seagulls take over AT&T Park well past midnight, they were wiped out. This week's win at San Francisco took 16 innings ? the Mets already had lost a 20-inning game and a pair of 15-inning contests.

"I've never heard of anything like this. It's unbelievable," manager Terry Collins said. "At least we're used to it."

All over, fans are getting way more than their money's worth. Going into this weekend, 19 games had lasted at least 14 innings; there were a total of 20 last year, according to STATS.

"Is a lunar eclipse coming?" Oakland outfielder Josh Reddick wondered. "I have no idea. Probably more of a coincidence than anything. That's how the game goes sometimes."

    ___

    WACKY WEATHER

Even in ski country, this was a bit extreme: When the Atlanta Braves and Colorado Rockies started up at Coors Field in late April, it was 23 degrees. That made it the coldest game-time temperature in STATS' records, dating back more than two decades.

Braves pitcher Mike Minor threw six innings and won ? in short sleeves, no less. He figured long sleeves wouldn't help much. He also got a trainer to rub his arms, back and thighs with a heating ointment.

"I was burning up there," he said, smiling.

Snow at Target Field, hail at Yankee Stadium and buckets of rain from coast to coast. More than 30 games postponed so far, going in the weekend. Last year? Just 21, the whole season.

The crummy conditions have wreaked havoc with the schedule. With interleague games most every day, there's not a lot of wiggle room for makeups. So there's been a push to get the games in ? Tampa Bay waited out almost five hours of rain delays in Cleveland to win a game that started on a Friday night in May and finished on an early Saturday in June. The Mets, meanwhile, played in three different time zones in three days.

In St. Louis, there was a 4?-hour rain delay in the ninth inning before Kansas City outlasted the Cardinals. The game ended at 3:14 a.m. at Busch Stadium, and created travel trouble for the umpires, too ? they worked at Wrigley Field in Chicago the next afternoon.

"We worry about that game when we get to that one," crew chief Joe West said. "We had to worry about this game tonight."

And recently, a Giants-Reds rainout in Cincinnati had the teams talking about making it up at Coors Field, of all places. A neutral site in Denver might indeed be the most convenient spot for both clubs later this year.

    NEW WAVE

Be it Manny Machado, Bryce Harper or Mike Trout, the face of baseball is changing. Young stars are dominating, and also revving up the debate: Should Dodgers sensation Yasiel Puig ? that's "Pweeg" ? be on the All-Star team?

Jeff Locke is trying to pitch Pittsburgh toward its first playoff spot in two decades, Shelby Miller is dealing in St. Louis and Wil Myers is finding his stroke in Tampa Bay while Paul Goldschmidt and Patrick Corbin are leading Arizona. They were all excelling at the same time former perennial All-Stars Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Ramirez were toiling in the minors.

Oh, and let's salute Orioles slugger Chris Davis, who's proven HR-or-K hitters can learn the strike zone. Davis hit his major league-best 36th homer in Baltimore's 7-3 loss to Toronto on Saturday night.

    ___

    SUMMER SURPRISES

Overhauled Toronto and R.A. Dickey, the powerized Angels and Hamilton, plus the revamped Dodgers have all struggled to reach the .500 mark. The Nationals also hit a wall ? rather, Harper did while chasing a ball and landed on the disabled list.

Houston moved to the American League and got off a terrific start, beating Texas in the major league opener. Reality quickly set in, however. Their next time out, the overmatched Astros came within one out of having Yu Darvish throw a perfect game against them.

Much harder to figure, Matt Cain and the World Series champion San Francisco Giants.

A year ago, Cain pitched a perfect game. This year, he had one start when he gave up nine runs in an inning, another start when he permitted nine hits in an inning and, earlier this week, he was chased in the first inning.

Added up, the pitching-rich Giants fell far below the break-even point as the All-Star break neared ? even with Tim Lincecum's no-hitter late Saturday night.

"For the way we think we are as a group and the team that we are, we feel like this is really, really funky," Cain said.

What Happens When Domestic Violence Reverses? | Hurt2Healing ...

    Greetings H2H readers,

I wanted to share this interview with you all to bring some needed awareness to a subject that many don?t discuss. I, personally, know of at least 3 males who have experienced domestic violence from their spouse. Many don?t talk about their assaults due to the uneven perception of others or how it made them feel as a man. Yet, I believe this angle is long overdue for discussion.

According to BatteredMen.com,??5.3 million men are abused per year with 40% severe physical violence, but more often psychological.?

I pray this brother?s testimony finds a firm resting place in your minds & hearts.?

    Thank you & Peace,

Ebony S. Muhammad, Publisher of Hurt2Healing Magazine

    ?

    ?

Ebony S. Muhammad (EM): Please share the background and circumstances which led to the domestic violence you encountered in your marriage??

    ? ?

Rodney S. (RS): I am 28 years old, and I got married to my wife in September 2011. My Wife is 25 years old. We have been together for 4 years prior to getting married.

    ?

We separated in January 2013 due to me being assaulted by my wife. I don?t even like to call it that but it is what it is. The build up to this assault in my version goes like this.

    ?

It was a?Saturday?in January, and we were to going to my Sister-in-Law?s in London because it was her Birthday. We were going to be traveling with my In-Laws. At this time I was fasting, and I was doing a Daniel Fast so I could not eat meat and certain foods. I had asked my wife if she could find out what food might be at her sister?s so I would know if I could eat with them or not. She was not willing to ask and told me to bring my own food. So that morning I went out to get some food that I could prepare to bring with me. Before I left she asked me to buy a plate and bowl that to replace the ones that had accidentally broken months ago.

    ?

When I walked through the door I saw a text from her asking if I could get some eggs and other stuff. I apologized to her and said that I did not get the other stuff as I have only just seen the text message. She was annoyed and said, ?Do you not look around the kitchen to see if there is any other stuff to get?? I said, ?I?m sorry I did not look?.

    ?

I handed her the plate and bowl and she said that it did not match the current set we had and to take it back and aggressively asked when I would take it back. It silenced me and I said I would take it back on Monday.

    ?

To fast forward a little, we spent the day in London and she avoided me the whole time. The next day was?Sunday,?and she was working and I attended church. I got home from church quite late in the evening. I had been messaging her during the day to see that she was ok. When I got home she said to me she was going to bed. I said I?ll be up later. It was?midnight?and she woke up to go to the bathroom I was shutting down my laptop and just waiting for some updates to complete. She asked if I was coming to bed and I said yes and that I was shutting down the laptop. Then she moaned that I would wake her up when I come into the room. I said that you?re already awake, and then she said that when I wake up in the morning I would wake her and I said I?m sorry, but this happens every day.

    ?

We went to bed, and during while I was asleep I began to snore. She woke me up and asked me to turn over, because she could not sleep. So I sat up and said I can?t sleep on one side the whole night I toss and turn. She then pulled off the covers and stared at me. So I went to take the covers back so I could turn over, and I asked her to let go of the covers. She said nothing and stared at me I asked her 4 times to let go of the covers on the 5th time I shouted let go and my wife headbutted me in my face.

    ?

I sat in shock and in silence. I picked up my phone and called my In-Laws who live a 2minute drive from our flat. I told them what happened and asked them to come and take my wife. To cut a long story short they did not come. I sent a message to my church family via WhatsApp in brief saying, ?Please pray, my wife has headbutted me?.

    ?

I threw the phone on the floor and attempted to go back to sleep. I was scared and in a lot of pain. At around?4am?I woke up, picked up my phone and went into the living room. I called the emergency services and told them about my pain, and they said to come to A&E. I went back to the bedroom to tell my wife that I was in pain and that I was going to the A&E and she sniggered as to say, ?Why are you going to the hospital?? I went and got checked out and informed my family. They did not allow me to go back to my flat as they said they are not burying their brother. We separated after this and I moved out of the flat to my sister, and I am still here till today.

    ?

EM: Did it begin with verbal abuse, and if so please share some of that and how it made you feel, think and respond.

    ?

RS: The verbal abuse between me and my wife came out of anger, frustration and most so because issues between us were never resolved. I felt I always apologized for things that were not my fault just to keep the peace. It would make me feel low and less of a man. It was all about power and control with my wife. She wanted me to lead, but she would not let me because she always liked to be in control.

    ?

EM: As a result, did you isolate yourself from family or friends you were close to??

    ?

RS: We tried to resolve out issues as much as we could on our own. We had some counsel from church but were advised to get professional help. Our families did not get involved until the last minute. My wife did not like everyone knowing our business, and I felt the same way which is why we tried to resolve our arguments on our own.

    ?

EM: When and how did the abuse turn physical? Where were you when it took place?

    ?

RS: The first time it got physical was on my wife?s birthday when we went out with friends to a club. My wife had a few drinks prior going to the club. I did not want to get involved in the drinking, because the people we were with were not doing it responsibly. This upset my wife and caused her to distance herself from me the whole night. I approached her in the club and asked why she was avoiding me. It turned into an argument, and she ended up pushing her hand in my face which knocked my glasses off. I picked up my glasses and went towards my wife as I was angry at this point and her friends thought I was going to hit her and they stepped up to me. I am so glad they did this as I don?t know exactly what I was going to do if I got up to my wife. I got kicked out of the club. But this was when it started getting physical.

    ?

EM: What were triggers for her to act out toward you?

    ?

RS: The triggers would be raising my voice or not resolving things straight away if she was upset, because this would make her fester. I was not physically afraid of my wife, but her words could be quite damaging. It did not help that I was passive and just accepted it.

    ?

EM: At any point did you take on the belief that it was your fault and that you deserved what was happening to you as is the case with female victims?

    ?

RS: No. I knew I did not deserve to be treated like this. But I did not see the underlying issue and just moved on thinking that it would sort itself out. I realized that whatever started to make my wife become violent had to with something from before I came on the scene. I have never done anything to her that should make her react in that way. The only thing I do feel guilty about is not trying to get her help while we have been separated, but she does not talk to me and does not think there is anything wrong. She has to do this journey on her own.

    ?

EM: ?What thoughts about being a male in an abusive relationship came up for you? What was the most difficult part about this for you?

    ?

RS: When I was headbutted I did not retaliate with violence. I never touched her at all. I immediately called my In-Laws to come and help and take her, but they failed and they did not come. My male friends salute me and say well done for not hitting her.

    ?

I was very hurt, because it made me think how many more men are there out there that are being abused and not talking about it. I initially was going to keep the incident to myself.

    ?

The difficult part for me was thinking to myself, ?Why is this happening?? and ?It?s not supposed to be this way?. I chose this woman to be my wife; I did not want anyone else. My confidence was knocked, and my manhood was violated which made me angry inside.

    ?

EM: What factors kept you from walking away when it first began?

    ?

RS: The fact I did not want to divorce. I knew marriage was hard work and my rationale was to keep working at it.

    ?

EM: Let?s go to the moment you knew it was time to leave. Did you confront her, inform her or leave without her knowing??

    ?

RS: A phone call was made between us on that day in the morning when I came back from hospital, and we both said it was over. ?My sister came with me to get some things from the flat so I could be safe and stay with her. This is how I left.

    ?

EM: What thoughts were going through your mind as you made moves to leave?

    ?

RS: I had butterflies. I did not want to divorce, but I was still in shock about what happened. Initially my safety came first so it was important that I left the flat for that reason. I was scared about the next steps so I was not 100% committed to getting out because I love my wife. I just knew she needed help.

    ?

EM: How did she react once she realized you were leaving her?

    ?

RS: I would not know as I was not around. We did meet up a few months after the incident to see where we were and what we would do to move forward. She was not interested in getting back together she was still angry about being brought in by the police for questioning about the assault. I said to her if this is the last time I ever see you I just want you to know that I am sorry for whatever it was that I did. I said I want to take responsibility for anything I did wrong.

    ?

EM: ?What was your healing process like? What promises did you make to yourself as it relates to relationships?

    ?

RS: My family and friends were my support unit. They contacted me from time to time to check I was ok. I was going counseling prior to this incident and so I have continued with that. It had not been easy. I still get angry inside about the incident. It was very traumatic as the incident played over in my head for at least 2 months, and it was after that I could sleep properly. I didn?t make any promises about relationships, but if we do not reconcile then it will be a learning experience about how info about my future relationships.

    ?

I am stronger. I can walk the streets with my head held high, because I did nothing wrong. I would never retaliate with violence, and if I found myself in this situation again I would walk away. No one deserves it, but it?s hard because it?s always the one that loves you the most receives the most pain.

    ?

EM: What is your life like today?

    ?

RS: Well I?m still establishing my walk with?Jesus. I am a Musician and I?m focusing on that. I am also focusing on my health and trying to lose weight by doing 5k runs, swimming, boxing and personal training sessions. I have a busy life but still make time for me. I treat myself now and then as I never used to before. I look after my family and try to enjoy my life and continue that journey if strength and happiness.

    ?

EM: For other men who are in abusive relationships, what words would you like to share with them? How would you appeal to the ?male ego? after suffering abuse??

    ?

RS: I would say don?t hold it in. Speak to someone. There is no need to be afraid. You are more of a man if you did not touch her, but if you did God can forgive you. There is not much support for men on this topic so find other men that can help you and speak out. Do not be Afraid.

    ?

EM: Does the degree of abuse make a difference, meaning does it mean less if its only verbal vs. physical? What level of concern should there be at the first act of physical abuse??

    ?

RS: I don?t think any abuse is acceptable. I advise to try and deal with it in the first instance via counsel or communication.

    ?

Once abuse becomes physical, firstly, get to a safe place and get help immediately.

    ?

EM: What are some Red Flags you suggest men to look for?

    ?

RS: In my case it was the anger and shouting. Also power, control and emotional bullying. That?s the red flags in my case.

    ?

EM: Is there anything else you would like to add?

    ?

RS: My wife was brought into the station for questioning as I reported the incident to the police. I did this to give her a wakeup call. I dropped the charges a few days later.

    ?

My wife has identity issues and is not in a good place. I believe she is fronting and just putting on show but deep inside she is hurting.

    ?

EM: Thank you very much for sharing your story beloved. May God continue to bless you and heal you.

RS: You?re welcome, and thank YOU.

Tough love at Church-run center for Myanmar heroin addicts

A year ago, Wun Naung Lay left his village in northern Myanmar to look for work and found heroin instead. Today, the skeletal 25-year-old is locked up and going cold turkey beneath a filthy blanket in a bamboo cell.

Wun Naung Lay is one of more than 600 young men who have undergone primitive drug rehabilitation at the Youth for Christ Centre, a collection of tin-roofed shacks on a riverbank in Kachin State.

Myanmar is the world's second-largest producer of opium after Afghanistan and use of its derivative, heroin, is widespread. The center's popularity is a testament both to the severity of Myanmar's drug problem and the lack of options for users in a poor country where modern treatment programs are rare.

It offers a 40-day "course" of prayer, Bible study and devotional singing, with football and weightlifting for those strong enough.

Detox begins in the Special Prayer Room, as the bamboo cell is called. New arrivals are locked in around the clock for seven to ten days.

"At first I just wanted to go home, but now I'm feeling a bit better," said Wun Naung Lay, whose forearms are perforated with needle holes.

The Youth for Christ Centre is the brainchild of Ndingi Laja, 45, a former convict and folk singer better known by his stage name Ahja.

A wiry and intense figure, Ahja believes his devotion to God helped him kick heroin while serving a nine-year sentence for drug use. Founded in 2009, a year after his release, the center is an attempt at faith-based abstinence on a larger scale.

His methods find little support among global health experts, who say voluntary drug treatment is not only more humane but also more effective.

Guy Robs Store of iPhones, Leaves His Samsung Galaxy

Sometimes reality can trump anything fiction has to offer. This is one of those times.

Police say a 25-year-old Virginia man broke into a wireless store and smashed a case that held several iPhones. Obviously, this wasn't one of the brightest ideas this man has had in his life (c'mon, has he not read about the low-cost iPhone that is supposed to be coming out soon?) Anyway, boom?the man was off with the iPhones in hand, the perfect theft. When cops responded to the alarm, they found the case of missing iPhones. But hidden under broken glass near the door, they found something new: a Samsung Galaxy. Hm?

So, this happened back in February. After looking through surveillance footage, the police got an idea of the thief's appearance and build, then they traced him using the subscription information on the Galaxy phone he left behind, and found out his name is?Travis Montgomery Snyder. Once they had a match, they arrested Snyder on Monday.?

Samsung saves the day. Justice served.

Dos Pueblos Mock Trial Team Earns Return Trip to World Tournament in New York

After advancing to the championship round last year and being stranded in New York by Hurricane Sandy, the Dos Pueblos High School Mock Trial Team has once again been selected to compete in the Empire City World Invitational Mock Trial Tournament to be held in New York City this October.

The tournament, considered the most prestigious high school mock trial invitational tournament, brings 40 teams to the Big Apple from across the country and around the globe ? including teams from the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, South Korea, Canada and Australia.

This year?s tournament will be held Oct. 18-21 at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Brooklyn.

In their first-ever appearance at Empire, last year?s team upset their bracket?s top seed and advanced to the championship round, losing a close match against La Reina High School from Ventura County on the day that Hurricane Sandy made landfall in New York.

La Reina?s team followed their championship at Empire by winning their unprecedented third straight California championship ? once again edging Dos Pueblos in a tough first-round matchup. DP?s Madeline Matthys won an individual award as the tournament?s outstanding defense attorney. In addition, Delia Bullock and Ami Thakrar won recognition for outstanding witness portrayal and outstanding clerk respectively.

?The team is over-the-moon excited to be able to compete at Empire again this year,? said team co-captain Camille Wyss, who is a senior trial attorney. ?Last year, not only did we have a fantastic time, it was the best competition we had had the opportunity to compete at. The atmosphere of the Empire competition ? and New York City ? is infectious, and we couldn?t be more excited to be a part of the action again. I can?t think of a better way to start my fourth and final year with the Dos Pueblos Mock Trial Team.

?We have a long road ahead of us in terms of fundraising and preparing, but I am 100 percent confident that all of our work will be worth it when we get to New York and start to compete.?

The team is gearing up for a fundraising campaign to raise the necessary funds to travel to New York City for the tournament. The students will be holding a rummage sale in the Dos Pueblos High School staff parking lot from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 27. If you have items you wish to donate, please contact Delia Bullock at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Tax-deductible monetary donations can be made by sending a check payable to DPHS with the notation ?Mock Trial? on the memo line c/o faculty advisor Bill Woodard, 7266 Alameda Ave., Goleta, CA 93117, or electronically by clicking here. Contact Woodard at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) if you would like more information.

The members of the Dos Pueblos Mock Trial Team who will be competing at Empire are Delia Bullock, Madeleine Centrella, Laila Halimi, Alissa Kruidenier, Bela Lafferty, Madeline Matthys, Camille Wyss, Ami Thakrar and Sophia Zheng.

These students will now spend their summer preparing the fictional case of Midlands v. Dawson. In the case, Vanessa Sullivan, daughter of Midlands? most prominent prosecutor, celebrated her 21st birthday with two friends, Taylor Hopson and Danny Dawson, at Chuggie?s Sports Bar. After several hours of celebration at the bar, the three left in a car driven by Dawson. On the way home, Dawson lost control of the car, resulting in a crash in which Sullivan was killed. A special prosecutor was appointed because of the conflict of interest in having the victim?s parent?s office prosecute the case. A grand jury has returned a multicount indictment charging the defendant, Danny Dawson, with murder and driving under the influence.

In addition to Woodard, the coaching staff includes Joel Block, Scott Campbell, Corinne Dorais and Maureen Grattan.

? Bill Woodard is the assistant principal at Dos Pueblos High School and the faculty adviser for its Mock Trial Team.

Grand's first music video, for his country-tinged rock ballad "All-American Boy," was posted on YouTube last Tuesday. By last night, it had exploded, attracting more than 400,000 total views __ nothing for top-charting videos from big-name recording artists, but an impressive figure for one from a complete unknown whose only promotion has been internet buzz.

The video cost just $7,000, a fraction of the major-names' going rate, but it was a fortune to Grand, who came up with the entire budget himself by maxing out his only plastic to tell the video's story.

"All-American Boy" portrays a young gay man who misreads signals from an apparently straight "all-American" male friend. On a day hanging out with the gang, the two guys and a girl take off in a car. She drives, as the guys sit together in the back, with the straight man, at one point, falling asleep on the gay man's shoulder. Feeling like a third wheel, the girl eventually, angrily drives off, leaving the two men to pal around in the woods, where they end up stripping down and going skinny-dipping -- even sharing a quick kiss. Ultimately for the straight guy, it was just all in good fun. But for the gay man, it was something much more significant, and he is left dazed, confused and longing.

The story was inspired by one of Grand's own.

"I was a 13-year-old boy (at camp)," noted the 23-year-old singer-songwriter, speaking by phone from his hometown Chicago. "One of my counselors was warm and strong and he took an interest in me __ not sexually, but as a friend, and it really moved me. I remember leaving with a horrible ache in my heart."

While "All-American Boy" is told from the gay man's perspective, Grand said he knew its tale of unrequited love would resonate across lines of sexuality. He's received hundreds of postings on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook from viewers, both straight and gay, saying they understand such rejection and heartache.

"I'm not a cryer," noted Grand. "But since this all began, since people have been reaching out, I've been beyond moved, because so many people have felt what I felt, been through what I've been through."

Grand said that upon discovering he was gay in eighth grade, he told friends, which quickly got back to his parents. They insisted he go to so-called "straight therapy," which he endured for five years. But it didn't work.

He logged his full freshman year at Belmont University in Nashville, but, due to the costs, returned to Chicago. His recent employment has run the gamut from modeling to supplying music for Catholic church events, the latter being what he called the "food-money" gig.

Grand said he has no idea where the YouTube success may take him, though he does admit he's "not much of a singer" and more of a songwriter. "Of course, I want to continue to grow as a man and grow as an artist," he commented.

For now, Grand appears happy just being the moment, immersed in all those postings. "Just the hundreds of people who have said, 'Your story is my story. Thank you for this,' is enough for me."

"Like I said, I would die a happy man today," Grand continued. "And it's the first time in my entire life I can say that."

    Android Jelly Bean Overtakes Gingerbread

    Android Stats

The latest OS segmentation figures are out for Android and it?s great news for Google. Android 4.1.x/4.2.x aka Jelly Bean has now taken the lead and makes up the largest slice of Android devices out there with a distribution of 37.9%. Gingerbread has 34.1% and Ice Cream Sandwich with 23.3%. The other versions have all diminished to less than 5% in total.

With over 50% of devices now running a version of Android that?s 4.0.x or greater, the fragmentation of the past will soon become a distant memory.
