That was what then-CIA director George Tenet told the Bush White House about Iraq?s alleged possession of ?weapons of mass destruction? (WMD).
It was a phrase Mr. Tenet came to regret, asserting that others in the administration twisted its intended use ? that building public support for a US-led invasion of Iraq would be easy ? to make the CIA (and him in particular) the scapegoat when no WMD were found.
But Tenet admitted in his 2007 book ?At the Center of the Storm? that ?there was never a serious debate that I know of within the administration about the imminence of the Iraqi threat,? nor any in-depth discussion of possible alternatives to military invasion.
Fast-forward ten years since the beginning of the Iraq War ? which has cost 4,486 US military fatalities, plus at least several hundred US civilian contractors killed in Iraq ? and ?Iraq has informed every part of this debate? over Syria, writes Amy Davidson in the New Yorker.
The headline on a Politico piece reads: ?Iraq haunts President Obama?s Syria choices.?
?The ghosts of the Iraq War weigh heavily on the president and his top advisers handling the Syria crisis, according to former officials and analysts close to the administration,? writes Politico?s Josh Gerstein. ?They don?t want to get it wrong. They don?t want to move too quickly. They don?t want to spend the second term getting embroiled in toppling another Middle East dictator and cleaning up the aftermath after spending the first term getting untangled from the last war.?
It?s a specter with implications for Obama?s legacy; by nearly 2-to-1, Americans don?t think the war in Iraq was worth the cost.
In fact, Obama already has had a sort-of ?slam dunk? moment with his assertion that the Assad regime?s use of chemical weapons against Syrian rebels would constitute the crossing of an unacceptable ?red line,? with the implied warning that the US might then initiate a military response.
Has that red line been crossed?
"Our intelligence community does assess, with varying degrees of confidence, that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically, the chemical agent sarin," the White House said in a letter to members of Congress this week.
The operative phrase here seems to be ?small scale,? suggesting that the red line may have been nudged but not fully crossed. Speaking to reporters before meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah in the Oval Office Friday Obama implied as much.

Italy president set to announce choice for prime minister

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's president Giorgio Napolitano is set to announce on Wednesday his choice of prime minister to form a new government and pull the euro zone's third largest economy out of a two-month political rut.
The new coalition government, which could take office in a matter of days, would be backed primarily by the rivals on the center-left and center-right, the same parties that had refused to cut a deal since national elections in late February.
The person in pole position to receive the mandate is former Prime Minister Giuliano Amato, although the mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi and center-left deputy leader Enrico Letta have also emerged as possible candidates.
Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL), the center-left Democratic Party (PD) and the centrist Civic Choice movement of outgoing premier Mario Monti have all said they would cooperate with whoever Napolitano chooses.
"Given the crisis the country finds itself in, the country needs a strong, a durable government that can make important decisions ...," Berlusconi said after meeting Napolitano.
Letta, of the badly fractured PD, said his party would back any government committed to tackling the "social-economic emergency," and enacting serious political reform, including changes to a dysfunctional electoral law.
At the election, the center-left narrowly won a majority in the lower house but failed to win control of the Senate and was not able to form a government.
Hopes that the impasse would soon be over gave a further boost to financial markets on Tuesday, with the yield on 10-year Italian government bonds dropping below 4 percent and the spread, or risk premium over German bonds, narrowing further.
Italy's economy has been the most sluggish in Europe for more than a decade and mired in a deep recession since the middle of 2011, with no recovery in sight.
POLITICAL "IRRESPONSIBILITY"
Napolitano bent the will of the uncollaborative parties on Monday when he was inaugurated for an unprecedented second term. He berated the parties for their "irresponsibility" in prolonging a political deadlock for nearly two months.
He threatened to resign unless the parties agreed to cooperate and find some middle ground on much needed reforms.
The PD has emerged the most scarred from the crisis.
Deep internal divisions forced its leader, Pier Luigi Bersani, to resign after the PD's inability to cut a deal with either Berlusconi's center-right or the shock new third political force, Beppe Grillo's 5-Star Movement.
Berlusconi has capitalized on the center-left's woes. One poll gave the center-right a clear lead of around 8 points.
The anti-establishment 5-Star Movement of former comedian Grillo, which won a quarter of the vote and speaks for millions of Italians disillusioned with an entire political class, told Napolitano it would sit in opposition and may support specific reforms.
The Left Ecology Freedom party (SEL), a former partner of the PD, and Berlusconi's allies in the Northern League also said they would not join a coalition led by Amato.

Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni has been charged with doping violations after 11 of his horses were found to have traces of banned anabolic steroids, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) said on Wednesday.
The BHA said in a statement on its website britishhorseracing.com that the 37-year-old is accused of breaching rules ?related to prohibited substances, duty to keep medication records, and conduct prejudicial to racing?.
He is due to face a disciplinary hearing at the organisation?s London headquarters on Thursday afternoon and risks losing his training licence if found guilty.
The charges relate to samples that were taken earlier this year from 45 horses trained by Al Zarooni in Newmarket, eastern England.
Analysis of the samples revealed that 11 contained traces of the banned anabolic steroids ethylestranol and stanozolol.
Al Zarooni has made a big impact since becoming one of Godolphin?s trainers and won last year?s Dubai World Cup and the oldest English classic, the St Leger.
All of the horses which tested positive, including the unbeaten filly Certify, who was set to run in the 1,000 Guineas next week, have been barred from racing until further notice.
Al Zarooni has described the situation as ?a catastrophic error? and claimed that he did not realise he was in breach of racing rules by administering the drugs.
Godolphin, owned by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has ordered a full internal investigation and said it was a ?dark day? in their history.
The BHA, which said the case was ?one of the most significant alleged doping scandals in recent racing history?, meanwhile revealed that Al Zarooni has told investigators that a further four horses were administered one of the two prohibited substances.
All four were under his care but had not been part of the original testing.

Official: Cyber vulnerabilities found in Navy's newest warship

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The computer network on the U.S. Navy's newest class of coastal warships showed vulnerabilities in Navy cybersecurity tests, but the issues were not severe enough to prevent an eight-month deployment to Singapore, a Navy official said on Tuesday.
A Navy team of computer hacking experts found some deficiencies when assigned to try to penetrate the network of the USS Freedom, the lead vessel in the $37 billion Littoral Combat Ship program, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Freedom arrived in Singapore last week for an eight-month stay, which its builder, Lockheed Martin Corp., hopes will stimulate Asian demand for the fast, agile and stealthy ships.
"We do these types of inspections across the fleet to find individual vulnerabilities, as well as fleet-wide trends," said the official.
Cybersecurity is a major priority for the Navy, which relies heavily on communications and satellite networks for its weapons systems and situational awareness.
Defense Department spokeswoman Jennifer Elzea said the Pentagon's chief weapons test agency addressed "information assurance vulnerabilities" for the Littoral Combat Ship in an assessment provided to the Navy.
"The details of that assessment are classified," Elzea said.
Lockheed spokesman Keith Little said the company was working with the Navy to ensure that USS Freedom's networks were secure during the deployment.
The Navy plans to buy 52 of the new LCS warships in coming years, including some of Lockheed's steel monohull design and some of an aluminum-hulled LCS trimaran design built by Australia's Austal. The ships are designed for combat and other missions in shallower waters close to shore.
Freedom's first operational deployment was in the Caribbean Sea in 2010, where the ship participated in four drug transport busts and captured a total of five tons of cocaine.

NEW YORK?The Time 100 gala took place steps away from Central Park, Lincoln Center and Times Square. But for hundreds of "influential" people in attendance at the black-tie event celebrating the magazine's annual list, their thoughts were in Boston.
?We?ve suffered loss and we?re grieving, but we?re not bending,? Vice President Joe Biden, one of Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World, said. ?I promise you, next year?s marathon will be the biggest, most significant, the most attended marathon in history. That?s who we are. That will happen. That will happen.?
Like the first responders in Boston, Biden said, the Time 100 honorees "are people who refuse to yield, refuse to bend, refuse to bend to the pressure of orthodoxy, are unafraid to question conventional wisdom, refuse to be intimidated."
Biden continued, "Our belief in America is that of every difficult moment in our history, we've come out stronger. We actually believe that. And I'm absolutely confident that we will come out of this recent tragedy this last week stronger, because Americans believe that we can make hope and history arrive. It's stamped in our DNA."

Biden did not attend the cocktail party before dinner, but dozens of honorees did, including Sen. Rand Paul, United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Lena Dunham, Brian Cranston, Grammy-winning R&B stars Miguel and Frank Ocean, and former Sen. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, who paused for a photo with Daniel Day-Lewis and Steven Spielberg after the actor and director came through the Secret Service's metal detector.

Mia Farrow, sporting a Boston Red Sox T-shirt, held court with reporters who recognized her from her Twitter feed rather than her work as an actress.

Later, during dinner, Kimmel toasted his late-night rival.
"There's a group of people who are, some of whom are represented here tonight, who I believe are even more important than the politicians, the astronauts, activists, maybe even important than the doctors who are working on a cure for cancer and HIV, and that is comedians," Kimmel said. "Jimmy is probably a bigger influence on me than anyone in this room, because he's so talented and energetic that ... quite frankly, it's a pain in the ass.
"I also want to toast maybe the funniest guy in this room, maybe the funniest of all of us, Vice President Joe Biden," Kimmel said. "Remember that time he told everyone the president supported gay marriage before the president had a chance to? That was hilarious."
Kimmel even had a joke aimed at Marissa Mayer, Yahoo's chief executive and fellow Time 100 honoree.
"You know, I live in Los Angeles, so I wasn't planning to be here tonight," Kimmel said. "But Marissa Mayer said I had to come in, and she's very influential."

Mont. man reunited with bird he lost in a divorce
BUTTE, Mont. (AP) ? A Great Falls man who lost his macaw in a divorce about five years ago has been reunited with the bird, thanks to an observant friend.
Mike Taylor picked up the bird he calls "Love Love" at Montana's Parrot & Exotic Bird Sanctuary in Butte on Sunday.
After a friend of his earlier spotted the bird there, Taylor called sanctuary founder Lori McAlexander and said it was his. Taylor knew things about the bird that only he could have known ? like it was blind in one eye and said "love love."
McAlexander says the bird was surrendered after it bit a woman so hard she required medical attention.
Taylor says he initially got the bird after it was rescued from a woman who reportedly beat it with a broom.

Nokia's co-developed high-amplitude mics retain 10-month exclusivity, HTC has to look elsewhere (updated)
Nokia's injunction yesterday has now been made a little more concrete. The Amsterdam district court has handed down a 10-month ban on STMicroelectronics selling its high-amplitude mics to anyone other than the Finnish phone maker. The same dual-membrane microphone is used in both the Lumia 720 and the HTC One, but Nokia (which co-developed and designed the component) had signed a 12-month exclusivity deal with the chipmaker -- a deal that STMicroelectronics apparently thought was only six months long.
According to All About Phones NL, the ruling won't halt sales of One devices already out there, with the court stating that HTC was "blameless" and that it couldn't have known about the contract between Nokia and STMicroelectronics. In short, you'll still be able to buy HTC's flagship in the Netherlands with those dual high-amp mics in tow -- at least for now. We've reached out to both companies for comment, but it's shaping up to be another parts supply woe for HTC's new smartphone.
Update: We've just heard from HTC on this, and its response is largely the same as yesterday's:
"HTC is disappointed in the decision. We are consulting with STM and will decide whether it is necessary to explore alternative solutions in due course. In the meanwhile, we do not expect this decision to have any immediate impact on our handset sales."

Galapagos says discovers breast cancer drug candidate
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Belgian pharmaceutical company Galapagos said on Monday it had discovered a possible drug to treat breast cancer and expected to start first clinical trials in humans within a year.
The company, which has a series of alliances for its pipeline of drug candidates, said in a statement that GLPG1790 had shown high activity against breast tumors that were 'triple-negative' - lacking oestrogen, progesterone or HER2 receptors.
Galapagos said the triple-negative breast cancer accounted for a fifth of breast cancers, usually affected young women, and lacked available targeted drugs.

Boston Marathon bombing investigation turns to motive

BOSTON (Reuters) - With the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings lying seriously wounded in a hospital and unable to speak on Saturday, investigators worked to determine a motive and whether the ethnic Chechen brothers accused of the attack acted alone.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was captured late on Friday after a gunfight with police that ended a daylong manhunt and sent waves of relief and jubilation throughout Boston. His brother, Tamerlan, 26, died on Thursday after a shootout with police.
The younger brother was shot in the throat and could not speak because of injuries to his tongue, said a source close to the investigation. It was unclear when he would be able to talk again or when he would be charged.
"It's serious ... he's not yet able to speak," Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick told reporters on Saturday. "We have a million questions and those questions need to be answered."
The brothers are suspected of setting off bombs made in pressure cookers and packed with ball bearings and nails at the crowded finish line of Monday's marathon, killing three people and injuring 176.
Life in Boston began to return to normal on Saturday as the Red Sox returned to Fenway Park for the first time since the bombings, paying an emotional tribute to the victims and the first responders before their baseball game.
"When (Tsarnaev) was apprehended and we saw the reactions of everyone in Watertown, I just got online and got two tickets for the game," said Linda Gibbs, 52, from Westborough, Massachusetts. "We just really wanted to be here and to support everyone."
Tsarnaev had been hiding in a boat parked in the backyard of a house in the suburb of Watertown and was captured after a resident spotted blood on the boat and called police. He was being treated at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
The FBI believes Tamerlan was the leader of the pair, although investigators were checking on people who had contact with both brothers to see if anyone else was involved, said a senior U.S. law enforcement source.
Early indications are the brothers acted alone, Watertown Police Chief Edward Deveau told CNN on Saturday. "From what I know right now, these two acted together and alone," he said. "But as far as this little ... group, I think we got our guys."
PARENTS SAY SONS FRAMED
The FBI said it interviewed Tamerlan in 2011 at the request of a foreign government - identified by a law enforcement source as Russia - after that country raised concerns that he followed radical Islam. The FBI did not find any "terrorism activity."
Tamerlan traveled to Moscow in January last year and spent six months in the region, a law enforcement source said, but it was unclear what he did while he was there.
President Barack Obama said on Friday after the capture that questions remained from the bombings, including whether the two suspects received any help. Obama has described the bombings an act of terrorism.
Tsarnaev was a student at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and is believed to have been on the college campus on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, said a university official, citing witnesses, swipe cards and security cameras.
The family emigrated to the United States about a decade ago. The brothers spent their early years in a small community of Chechens in the central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan, a mainly Muslim nation of 5.5 million. The family moved in 2001 to Dagestan, a southern Russian province that lies at the heart of a violent Islamist insurgency and where their parents now live.
In separate interviews, the parents of the Tsarnaev brothers said they believed their sons were incapable of carrying out the bombings. Others remembered the brothers as friendly and respectful youths who never stood out or caused alarm.
"Somebody clearly framed them. I don't know who exactly framed them, but they did. They framed them. And they were so cowardly that they shot the boy dead," father Anzor Tsarnaev said in an interview with Reuters in Dagestan's provincial capital, Makhachkala, clasping his head in despair.
Ruslan Tsarni, who said he was an uncle of the brothers, told CNN on Saturday he first noticed a change in Tamerlan Tsarnaev's religious views in 2009. He said the radicalization of his nephew happened "in the streets of Cambridge."
ENEMY COMBATANT?
The bombings prompted contact between the United States and Russia on terrorism and the Kremlin said on Saturday that the presidents of both countries had agreed by telephone to increase cooperation on counterterrorism.
On Saturday, several Republican lawmakers called on Obama to try Tsarnaev as an "enemy combatant" under terms of war, without entitlement to Miranda rights - usually given by police to suspects before they are interrogated so statements can be admissible in court.
Authorities did not read the teenager the Miranda warning.
A Justice Department official said the government was invoking the public safety exception to Miranda to question the suspect extensively about other potential explosive devices or accomplices and to gain critical intelligence.
The Federal Public Defender Office said on Saturday it would represent Tsarnaev once charges were filed.
After combing through a mass of pictures and video from the site in the minutes before the Boston marathon bombing, the FBI publicized pictures of the two men on Thursday and asked the public for help in identifying them.
Just hours later, events began to unfold with the fatal shooting of a police officer on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and finally the Watertown firefight, during which police say the brothers threw bombs at officers. Tamerlan suffered fatal wounds, while Dzhokhar escaped on foot.
The hunt for Tsarnaev emptied Boston's streets as the city went into lockdown for most of Friday. Public transportation was suspended and air space restricted. Famous universities, including Harvard and MIT, closed after police told residents to remain at home.

Chicago (April 17, 2013)?With NBA play-offs just days away, hardcore basketball fans the world over are scrambling to get tickets to root for their favorite team. However, recent Mintel research reveals that most sports-lovers prefer to cheer their squad of choice on from the comfort of their couches. Indeed, 70% of those surveyed believe that a sports fan has to watch professional sporting events on TV, compared to just 41% who believe the same about attending sporting events in person.
?While the most enthusiastic sports fans continue to prioritize in-person viewing, most respondents are more reliant on watching sports on TV?and finding social opportunities to engage in sports that may occur outside of the stadium,? notes Gretchen Grabowski, travel and leisure analyst at Mintel. ?While most say they prefer to tune in to sports from home, they also prefer to do so with others as opposed to alone.?
Some 70% of sports fans prefer to watch or listen to games at home, compared to 26% who fancy doing so in person. Meanwhile, 66% of sports lovers would rather take in the game with others, versus 25% who like to watch or listen alone.
?Sports fans can make a social event out of tuning in to their leagues and teams of choice even when financial or other constraints dictate that out-of-home viewing isn?t an option,? adds Gretchen Grabowski. ?Marketers that acknowledge that in-home sports viewing may be the best?or only?venue for most fans and do more to make the activity fun are likely to make professional sports accessible to the most sports enthusiasts.?
Mintel research also found that sports fans think of the games as a bonding opportunity. Fifty-seven percent of fans say following sports is a good way to follow family tradition, while 72% believe wearing sports clothing and apparel makes them feel more spirited when watching a game. Additionally, 38% agree that the teams sports fans follow say a lot about who they are as a person.

The debate over CISPA, a law that could change Internet privacy
Overshadowed by congressional action on guns and immigration is an Internet privacy bill that could affect most Americans, without them knowing it, on a daily basis.
Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (or CISPA) is making its way through Congress, and it?s passed a House vote on Thursday.
The final vote in the House was 248-168, as 42 Democrats voted for the bill, while 28 Republicans voted against it.
And like gun control, it?s far from a done deal after the House passes CISPA. It would need Senate approval, and President Barack Obama has indicated he?ll possibly veto CISPA if it comes to his desk.
Both sides of Congress would need to muster a two-thirds majority vote to override the president?s veto, which would seem unlikely in the current political atmosphere of Washington.
At the heart of CISPA is a Fourth Amendment issue.
The amendment reads:
?The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.?
CISPA is designed to let the federal government work with private companies to fight hackers and cybercriminals in and outside of the United States. As part of the effort to detect cyber threats, private companies could voluntarily share with the government data about Internet users.
The sharing could be done in ?real time? as the cybercops try to defeat and track down the evildoers. Companies could also share data among themselves as part of the effort.
There are major drawbacks about the legislation, say CISPA?s critics. The privacy provisions for consumers, they claim, are vague or nonexistent. The government and companies can?t look at your personal data, such as medical records and tax returns, if they are part of the ?data dump? that is shared in real time. But the law doesn?t require that companies excise, or edit out, that information in the transfer process.
Another criticism is that a warrant isn?t needed for the government to obtain that information. And companies that share your information won?t be held legally liable for sharing that information, a practice that seemingly conflicts with privacy policies on existing websites.
CISPA?s biggest critic in Congress is a representative from Colorado, Jared Polis. The Democrat told the House on Wednesday, ?This is the biggest government takeover of personal information that I?ve seen during my time here in Congress.?
Mike Rogers, a Republican representative from Michigan and the House Intelligence Committee chairman, is leading the CISPA effort, along with Dutch Ruppersberger, a Democrat from Maryland.
Rogers believes the measure is long needed. ?People were stealing their identities, their accounts, their intellectual property, and subsequent to that, their jobs,? he recently said. ?[Web users] began to question the value of getting on Internet and using [it] for commercial purposes. Their trust in the free and open Internet ? was at risk.?
He has also stressed that participation in CISPA is voluntary for companies.
The Intelligence Committee also released a five-page document to counter what it calls ?myths? about CISPA, including how much personal data would be shared with the government?which it says would be a rare occurrence.
The American Civil Liberties Union, however, calls CISPA ?fatally flawed.?
?The core problem is that CISPA allows too much sensitive information to be shared with too many people in the first place, including the National Security Agency,? it says.
Unlike SOPA, the failed legislative attempt last year to halt online piracy, large tech companies are supporting the efforts to get CISPA passed.
At one time, Facebook and Microsoft had signed on to support CISPA, but now they are reportedly backing away. Google appears to be on the fence about the issue.
Major communications and utilities companies support CISPA, according to a list released by the House.
Last year, the House passed a similar CISPA bill, only to see it die in the Senate. Last August, a successful filibuster blocked CISPA from getting to the floor for a vote. Both libertarians and liberals had issues with the bill, and there were disagreements about which government agencies would be involved with CISPA.
The tea party-aligned group FreedomWorks is on record, again, as opposing CISPA on Fourth Amendment grounds.
?There are grave Fourth Amendment concerns with CISPA. The bill would override existing privacy laws to allow companies to share ?cyber threat information? with the federal government without making any reasonable effort to strip out any personal information from the file,? the group said in a statement.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation also has Fourth Amendment concerns.
?As it stands, CISPA is dangerously vague, and should not?allow for any expansion of?government powers through a series of poorly worded?definitions.??If the drafters intend to?give new powers to the government?s already extensive capacity to examine your?private?information, they should propose clear and specific language so we can?have a real debate,? the EFF said on its website.

SOFIA observations reveal a surprise in massive star formation
Apr. 17, 2013 ? Researchers using the airborne Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) have captured the most detailed mid-infrared images yet of a massive star condensing within a dense cocoon of dust and gas.
The star is G35.20-0.74, commonly known as G35. It is one of the most massive known protostars and is located relatively close to Earth at a distance of 8,000 light-years.
Until now, scientists expected the formation process of massive stars would be complicated by the turbulent, chaotic environments in the centers of new star clusters where they form. But observations of G35 suggest this giant star, more than 20 times the mass of our sun, is forming by the same orderly process as do stars with the same mass as the sun. Stars most like the sun are understood to form by simple, symmetric collapse of interstellar clouds.
"The focus of our study has been to determine how massive stars actually form," said Yichen Zhang of the University of Florida. Zhang is lead author of a paper about the discovery published April 10 in the Astrophysical Journal. "We thought the G35 protostar's structure would be quite complicated, but instead we found it is simple, like the cocoons of protostars with the sun's mass."
The observations of G35 were made in 2011 with a special camera aboard SOFIA, a modified Boeing 747SP aircraft that can carry a telescope with an effective diameter of 100 inches (2.5 meters) to altitudes as high as 45,000 feet (13,700 meters).
G35 was an ideal target for investigations because it is in an early stage of development. But infrared light coming from G35 is so strong it prevented infrared space telescopes from making detailed images. Also, the protostar is embedded so deeply in its natal cloud that it cannot be detected by optical telescopes observing from the ground at visible wavelengths.
Flying high above the light-blocking water vapor in Earth's atmosphere, the airplane-mounted Faint Object Infrared Camera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST) enabled astronomers to see G35 where it hides -- inside a dark, dense, interstellar dust cloud -- by collecting infrared light escaping the cloud. Uniquely suited for this work, FORCAST detected faint details next to bright structures at wavelengths inaccessible to any other telescope on the ground or in space.
"Massive stars, although rare, are important because there is evidence they foster the formation of smaller stars like our sun, and because at the ends of their lives they create and distribute chemical elements that are the basic building blocks of Earth-like planets," said co-author James De Buizer, a SOFIA staff scientist with the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif.

Figures 1a and 1b show FORCAST images of G35 at wavelengths of 31 and 37 microns. Figures 2a and 2b respectively present G35 images obtained by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the Gemini-North telescope at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, also used in this study. Figure 3 shows computer model images intended to match characteristics of the central regions of the images in figures 1a and 1b.
The model images show greatly simplified versions of what is revealed especially in the SOFIA images: a luminous protostar heating a dense interstellar cloud from the inside while simultaneously expelling cone-shaped jets of gas toward the tops and bottoms of the frames. The top outflow cone appears brighter because it is directed toward us and there is less obscuring material along the line of sight.
The high resolution of the images showcases the capability of modern infrared detector arrays when used on an airborne platform and gives scientists hope that data gathered in this way substantially will advance their understanding of the Milky Way galaxy.
FORCAST was built by a team led by Terry Herter of Cornell University in Ithica, N.Y. Co-authors of the Astrophysics Journal paper include scientists from the University of Florida in Gainesville; University of Wisconsin in Madison; University of California at Berkeley; Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge; the Arcetri Observatory in Florence, Italy; and the USRA SOFIA science staff at Ames.
SOFIA is a joint project of NASA and the German Aerospace Center. SOFIA is based and managed at NASA's Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, Calif. Logitech unveils Harmony Smart Control, uses your iPhone to control your entertainment center
Logitech will soon allow you to control your entire home entertainment system from your iPhone using its new Harmony Smart Control system. Centered around a small black box called the Harmony Hub that connects to up to eight devices through Wi-Fi, the Harmony Smart Control lets users control their television, sound system, game console and media players using Logitech?s iOS app.
Control your home theater devices from the iPhone or Android mobile phone you already own. Anyone in the house can download the Harmony iPhone or Android app turn their mobile phone into a personal universal remote control, including 50 favorite channel icons and gesture control.
Although it comes with a remote, the power that this system is supposed to have really centers on the app, which requires iOS 5.0 or later. You can set up the Harmony Hub through the app using Bluetooth, and then configure your devices individually. Then you can use the app to do things like change the channel and control movie playback on a game console. Logitech makes a point of saying that the Harmony Hub can be hidden in a cabinet or on a shelf, getting out of the way. The Harmony app will be free, while the Harmony Smart Control, the Hub with a basic remote, is available for pre-order for $129, and is expected to be released in May.

Art exhibitions at the cinema: Coming soon to a screen near you ...
IN FILMS, the main purpose of paintings is to be stolen (?The Thomas Crown Affair? and ?Trance?) or to unlock a ludicrous conspiracy (?The Da Vinci Code? and ?Nightwatching?). But now, art and film are coming together in a different way.
In November 2011, ?Leonardo Live? took cinema-goers on a guided tour of the National Gallery?s Leonardo da Vinci exhibition on its opening night. Hosted by Tim Marlow, a British art historian and presenter, it was shown simultaneously across 900 cinemas in 20 countries. The film was a ?raging success? according to its producer and director, Phil Grabsky. So it is no surprise that Mr Grabsky is planning to make regular follow-ups as part of a new project called EXHIBITION. The first film, to be screened globally on April 11th, is ?Manet: Portraying Life?, the current exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. Later this year Mr Grabsky will make films of ?Munch 150? in Oslo and ?Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure? at the National Gallery in London. Filming exhibitions in Australia, Japan and America is planned for next year. ?We aren?t seeking to replace the experience an individual would have in front of a great work of art,? says Mr Grabsky, from his Brighton office. ?But many, many thousands of people simply do not have that opportunity. But they can go to their local cinema.?
He and Mr Marlow had been collaborating on television documentaries for Channel Five and Sky Arts for years when they decided to transfer to the big screen. They were encouraged in part by the popularity of National Theatre Live. This initiative began in June 2009, when Nicholas Hytner?s production of ?Phedre?, starring Helen Mirren, was beamed from the London theatre to cinemas around the world. The scheme would have been inconceivable before digital projection did away with the need to transport canisters of celluloid to individual cinemas. And it has proven to be a hit. Subsequent National Theatre Live screenings have sold almost a million tickets, and similar transmissions from the Globe, the Royal Opera House and the Royal Ballet are almost as big a draw. They are a win-win-win situation: the screenings are profitable for theatre companies; a boon to arts lovers who don?t live in capital cities; and ammunition for cinemas as they battle for survival against ever-more-advanced home-entertainment systems.
But can an idea which works so well for plays and ballets work for exhibitions too? Theatre and film have numerous similarities; both are in the business of performing arts. But visual art is a different beast. Shuffle around the Royal Academy, and, crowds permitting, you can see the paintings at your own pace. You can pore over every brushstroke or glance at a painting in passing. You can peer at the canvas from the angle of your choice, and plot your own route round the gallery. Watching EXHIBITION?s film is hardly the same.
Instead, what audiences get is a close cousin to an arts documentary. Mr Marlow and an impressive line-up of pundits spend roughly four minutes apiece discussing eight paintings, while the other works are seen only briefly, or missed out entirely. The film also includes trips to Paris to fill in Manet?s biography, as well as behind-the-scenes sequences examining the logistics of mounting the exhibition. Considering how uncomfortably packed the Royal Academy was when I visited this week, the film is an enticing alternative. But if you?re hoping to see most of Manet?s paintings on-screen, you might well feel short-changed.
?We want to give the audience the best cinematographic experience we can,? argues Mr Grabsky, ?and I don?t think that?s a virtual walkthrough.? The film aims to ?direct the eye and unlock some doors,? he says. ?But ultimately it?s about storytelling. We want the viewer to feel as if 90 minutes have gone by in a flash because they?re constantly being entertained and informed.?
Some might object that they could be entertained and informed by a comparable documentary at home for free. But there is no doubt that watching a film on a vast screen in a dark auditorium forces you to pay attention in a way that television viewing doesn?t?especially if you have booked your ticket in advance. You are in what Mr Grabsky calls ?an enveloping environment of comfort and silence?, and that might be reason enough to catch an EXHIBITION film at the cinema.
Mr Grabsky hopes so, anyway. The project is ?a huge financial gamble for us,? he says. The Manet film cost his Seventh Art production company ?close to ?200,000?, and they are currently looking for a sponsor. But he is passionate, even evangelical, about EXHIBITION?s value. ?I know we?re all busy,? he says, ?but taking 90 minutes of your time to admire the work of the world?s greatest creative geniuses has to be worth it.?

In?Slate?s Archer TV Club, Jeremy Stahl will IM each week with a different fan of the FX spy comedy. This week he chats with TV Guide senior writer Damian Holbrook.
Stahl: Thanks so much for joining me, Damian. You moderated a very fun-looking Archer panel at San Diego Comic-Con last year and I?m really glad to have you here for the season 4 finale. I have to say that I thought last week?s episode was a bit disappointing. Even Archer executive producer Matt Thompson described ?Sea Tunt: Part 1? as ?kind of a prick tease of an episode.? But I felt like tonight?s conclusion totally vindicated last week's show.
Holbrook: I felt the same way about part one. It was like a long tease to get to the Jon Hamm moment. It still had great stuff for Cheryl, though.
Stahl: This week, Lana, Cyril, Ray, and Archer are tasked with taking out rogue eco-terrorist and Sealab 2021 icon Captain Murphy, voiced brilliantly by the aforementioned Hamm. Murphy is threatening to blow up New York, and (less importantly to Mallory) Miami and D.C., if his insane demands (a complete moratorium on all fishing for 50 years) aren?t met.
If last week?s episode was one extended helicopter ride to get us to the underwater SEA LABoratory, this week plunged us right into the Dangaaa Zone. I loved the undercover personas each agent had, especially Archer?s Local Emmy winning camera-dude/nationally ranked kite surfer Randy Magnum. Also, great to see Archer?s Bob/Guido Sardouchebag moustache back.
Holbrook: I am obsessed with Randy Magnum now. I fully expect to see some cosplay of that at SDCC this summer.
Stahl: In her review for the AV Club, Sonia Saraiya described how last week's episode sort of ratcheted up the previously laughably low stakes for ISIS. Even if Murphy's terrorist threat turned out to be make-believe this week, the stakes felt elevated even further, especially in that final scene.
Even though Lana's pregnancy was heavily foreshadowed early in the episode, the reveal still felt like a big one because of the suspense of that moment with the Sealab being flooded and everybody's lives at stake. Also, even though you knew Archer would survive, that defibrillator scene was genuinely tense?a lot like the skydive off of the Tunt Towers. The action this season has generally been much improved.
Holbrook: The pod flooding sequence?which oddly reminded me of the large set piece from that Poseidon remake a few years ago?was pretty fluid (excuse the pun). In fact, I would say the action parts of the show have been amping up ever since the Burt Reynolds episode.
Another thing that really surprised me was the heightened emotionality. Archer's "sacrifice" and his resurrection brought out a level of emotion in Lana that was all about Aisha Tyler's vocal performance. Of course, seconds after that, it was back to their usual business of love-hate.
Stahl: You noted in your Comic-Con panel that you thought Lana still might love Archer. I think this episode completely bears that out and demonstrates that the love is reciprocal. I mean, Archer even said it himself when he was drowning. Do you think they're going to be getting back together next year?
Holbrook: I do think a reunion is in the cards, if only to bring in fresh material for them to fight about. The writers can't keep going back to referencing their failed relationship, three seasons later. As for them hinting at Lana's pregnancy, I missed those tell-tale signs completely because I was chalking them up to a callback to last season's ?Space Race? finale, which saw Lana vomiting most of her time in orbit.
They even dropped "boondoggle" a few times, not to mention the mirrored eco-maniac plot, so I just assumed they were having fun recasting "Space Race" at a much lower altitude.
Stahl: All true. I thought they did a great job of making Captain Murphy more likeable than Bryan Cranston?s ?Space Race? villain Commander Drake, though. When he wasn't psychotically threatening destruction upon America?s major east coast cities and holding a knife to Lana?s throat, of course.
Can we talk about Jon Hamm's voicing? This was my favorite cameo of the entire series. And I'm not even a Mad Men fan. Hamm's comic timing is just so perfect, and the way that he read the canned arch-villains lines was so terrifically deadpan.
Holbrook: Totally. Jon Hamm is too good looking to be as funny as he is. And his performance here was a perfect fit for the cadence and style Archer is known for. I was, however, a little concerned by how gravelly his voice sounded.
And once Lana called him out on not having the chemical weapons, he shifted slightly enough from Master Villain to Tragic Tree Hugger to make his final moments believable. I especially appreciated the fact that he was crushed to death by a Goz Soda Machine, a sweetly morbid nod to Sealab 2021's original Captain Murphy, the late Harry Goz
Stahl: Thompson mentioned in his Warming Glow chat last week that there would be an awesome Harry Goz shoutout, and I totally missed it! That note makes the last scene flawless. Captain Murphy's final words were some of my favorite Archer dialogue of all time: "Awk-ward! Ignore me, sorry, I'm dying. Crushed by an offbrand drink machine. Oh my God, just like that old gypsy woman said?gurggle." So much Archer-ness for one guest character.
Holbrook: And that was right after his line about his spleen slipping out of what used to be his anus. A line only Jon Hamm could pull off with such deadpan perfection.
Stahl: Overall, I think this season felt simpler and more cohesive than season 3. The jokes have been better than ever, and as we've already said, the emotional stakes and the quality of the action sequences have been heightened significantly.
Holbrook: This was definitely a standout season. It was firing on all cylinders and dared to go so far away from the ISIS offices that I feel like we got an expanded Archer universe. And after this episode, we had one that sets up next year for some very interesting possibilities. Mallory as Grandma. Pam as the world's most vile wet nurse. Maybe even a baby battle between Lana's kid and the Wee Baby Seamus.
Stahl: I am kind of hoping for some sort of 3 Men and A Baby antics with Krieger, Cyril, and Archer, even though we?ve already established that the dad is a sperm donor, and Lana would never, ever sleep with Krieger (who stole this finale, by the way, with that nude coked up drum solo). Okay, I could go on about how much I loved this episode and how much I love this show, but the internet only has a limited amount of space. Right?
