Money Beliefs: How Are They Shaping You?

iStock_000020938697XSmallI was talking to a guy recently and he mentioned several times during the conversation that he couldn?t afford something, he wouldn?t spend the money on something else, and that he had to watch every penny he spends although he admitted to being debt free other than his house mortgage. ?I left the conversation wondering if he was just plain cheap or completely engulfed by lack mentality.

I realize that the recent financial hard times have definitely put a damper on spending and the way people think about money, but this conversation made me wonder if all the doom and gloom that is thrown at us on TV, radio and internet has begun to erode our beliefs on money, abundance and prosperity. ?I wonder if many people are becoming paralyzed by fear and now see the world as a place of lack and scarcity instead of a place of creativity, new ideas and expansion of good throughout the world. I wonder if some people see money as evil or feel that they are unworthy of financial prosperity and subconsciously sabotage themselves from financial abundance.

So what are a few things that might ease the fear of money and abundance?

1. Remind yourself daily that you are worthy. You are worthy of success. You are worthy of abundance. You are worthy to make money in order to give back more to the world to improve it.

2. God has made us stewards of his blessings. When you hoard or act stingy with your money, you send the message that you don?t trust God to provide more. Release that fear and allow God to use your talents, creativity and diligence in many areas to give and expand your abundance.

3. Understand that money is a tool, it is not the craftsman.

4. Begin to tithe consistently. This was a huge breakthrough for me. I used to think I couldn?t tithe 10% because I was a single mom and that I needed every penny to make it month to month. Several years ago, I started giving 10% to my spiritual source through my church and through a mission that I work with in Haiti. Interestingly enough, since then, I?ve never missed a meal, had money to pay all the bills, had money to buy my children what they needed, had enough to still go to seminars, classes and events to improve myself and even had money for entertainment like concerts, sports events, movies and family trips. I can?t really explain it other than my mindset and behavior shifted and the money somehow appears in random ways. I see it as God?s way of shaping me and letting me know that I can trust him to be my provider no matter what.

So whether you believe in God or not, I urge you to look at your mindsets and beliefs about money and see if they are holding you back. Do you see the cup as half empty or half full? Small shifts to reduce your clinging mindsets will go a long way in opening up possibilities and abundance in your life and in your wealth. When you approach the world with your palm open instead of clinched, you send the signal that you are open to give and to receive.
