ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Not everyone has a taste for fish, even though it is a natural source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
And while a growing number of omega-3 enriched foods may net health benefits for people who resist the lure of salmon or sashimi, milk remains the product that has gotten away in what has become a billion-dollar health industry.
But now, food science researchers at Virginia Tech may have reeled milk into the omega-3 delivery system, showing it is possible to incorporate fish oil into milk and dairy-based beverages in amounts sufficient to promote heart health, without destroying the product's taste or limiting its lifespan.
Even better, the milk passes the sniff test. Twenty-five volunteers evaluated one-ounce cups of standard 2 percent milk alongside samples of skim milk containing 78 parts butter oil to 22 parts fish oil in institutionally approved study conditions.
"We couldn't find any aroma differences," said Susan E. Duncan, a professor of food science and technology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. "We were concerned the fish oil would undergo a chemical process called oxidation, which would shorten the milk's shelf life, or the milk would acquire a cardboard or paint flavor by reacting with the fish oil. It appears we have a product that is stable, with no chemical taste or smell issues."
The study, featured in the November issue of the Journal of Dairy Science, tested four different ratios of butter oil to fish oil in the production of pasteurized, fatty acid-fortified beverages.
The aroma-free formulation delivered 432 milligrams of heart-healthy fatty acids per cup, close to the 500 milligram daily target for healthy people suggested by a broad range of health studies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests daily consumption of 250 milligrams per day in healthy adults.
Research has shown omega-3 fatty acids are helpful for preventing coronary disease, reducing inflammation, assisting infant brain development, and maintaining brain function.
Meanwhile, the American Heart Association recommends eating two servings of fatty fish per week, citing research that has shown omega-3 fatty acids decrease the risk of potentially fatal heart arrhythmias, decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth of atherosclerotic plaque, and slightly lower blood pressure.
But fish hasn't caught on with everyone, making room for new foods and beverages fortified with omega-3s in an expanding marketplace. Sales are expected to reach more than $3 billion in 2016, according to marketing analysts.
"I think the dairy industry can look at our study and determine whether it is plausible to modify its products," Duncan said. "I would like to help people who love milk, yogurt, and dairy, which have intrinsic nutritional value, address an additional need in their diets, especially if they don't like to eat fish or can't afford it. One of these dairy servings a day apparently is enough to sustain enough continuous omega-3 to benefit heart health."
If such a product catches on with consumers, Duncan said the next step for researchers is to follow groups of volunteers in an epidemiological study of whether the food improves health outcomes.
"Milk was first fortified with Vitamin D as a way to fight rickets -- a disease that leads to soft or weak bones," said Kerry E. Kaylegian, a dairy foods research and extension associate with Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, who was not involved in the research. "It was a good approach to address a dietary deficiency disease, because so many people drink milk, which is already loaded with nutrients. This study describes fortification of milk with omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. We can't say lack of those compounds definitively causes cardiac disease, but there is evidence that they protect us and contribute to heart and brain health. Milk would be a good delivery vehicle for those nutrients."

Have you ever Googled ?Travel Insurance?? I just did and I got something like 229,000,000 hits in 0.38 of a second! If you have heaps of time on your hands you may be able to wade through all these pages and find the one that best suits your needs is on page 1,546! But the reality is, most of us do not.
This snap from ?The Australian? says it all
Many websites have search engines embedded in their home page, so shopping around is pretty easy. You can use ?Get a Quote? and in a matter of another nano second you have a good selection to read through. Think carefully about your needs as you only want to pay for what you will use in the policy, for the duration of your trip. There are basics like, luggage loss, sickness, cancellation fees that affect us all, but there can be savings if you read the fine print, and choose carefully.
Trip Advisor have a great forum that has many discussion threads about travel insurance companies and who pays up (and who doesn?t), so have a quick look there to help you decide once you have narrowed down your choices.
My suggestions are as follows and please feel free to add your two bobs worth if you have found one to be really reliable and actually PAY, should the need arise.
1. Check the Excess you will need to pay if you make a claim. The higher it is, the cheaper your policy becomes. Just like any other insurance.
2. Make sure you have a reputable underwriter for the policy.
3. Cover for laptops, iPads, cameras etc are sometimes not included in policy and can be exclusions and you may be required to pay an additional premium
4. You may find some categories are irrelevant for you so read and choose carefully.
5. Read the reviews other users have written about that company, either on their site or in travel forums. Lonely Planet?s Thorntree Forum is a treasure trove for this and anything!
6. The Australian Government?s Smart Traveller website is a handy reference to cross check you have covered all bases
7. Check that it covers the countries you are going to visit
8. Make sure you disclose any pre-existing medical conditions
9. If you are planning a bungie jump in New Zealand, this may require an additional premium, so double check that with your insurer.
10. Some banks will provide Travel Insurance free as part of their credit card service. You may be lucky, but make sure it is a good fit for you.
The Insurance Council is also full of great information that could help you.
But just remember, you need peace of mind when you travel, so not having insurance is not an option! If you don?t believe me, read my lovely friend Mary Lou?s Wheel Chair Bound in New York City back in July?then you will!
Send this to any of your friends whom you think may be a little accident prone!!
EE, the UK's only 4G LTE mobile network, has announced that it's increasing the amount of data available to its mobile broadband customers -- that's anyone using one of EE's data-only plans with a compatible device.
Customers on a 2GB allowance will see that increased to 3GB, 3GB users will get bumped up to 5GB, and 5GB customers will have their data cap increased all the way to 8GB. Monthly fees will remain the same.
EE is also launching a SIM-only data-only plan on a rolling 30-day contract, which offers 5GB for £15.99 per month. EE doesn't currently sell any 4G-capable Android tablets, but if you've already picked one up (and it supposed LTE on 1800MHz), you'll be able to use it with this new price plan. To sweeten the deal, EE says the first month of service will be free for those signing up before Dec. 23.
Unfortunately the new price plans don't extend to EE's smartphone SIMs, which require a minimum commitment of 12 months on SIM-only, or 24 months if you include a phone.
If you?re like most people, your pre-travel to-do list includes booking your own flights, checking yourself in and printing or downloading your own boarding pass. These days, you can add baggage handling to your to-do list.

17:00 Bacia do Rio Grande: A suggestion for river management to avoid "apages" and the impact of the expansion of sugar-cane plantation
Professor Cintia Bertacchi Uvo, whom originates from So Paulo herself, will present two of her research topics closely related to the Brazilian reality. The first is the performance of long-term hydrological forecast for some of the major Brazilian river basins. Such a forecast is of key importance for the management of hydro power production for avoiding "apages". The second topic is related to the impact of the expansion of sugar-cane plantations on the Rio Grande basin. How the expansion has happened, and what would be the impact for the hydrology in case the plantation scenario suggested by EMBRAPA is implemented.
17:30 MAX IV Laboratory -the world's most brilliant synchrotron radiation source
Yngve Cerenius, Project Coordinator and Industrial Liaison Officer at the MAX IV Laboratory. Two state of the art large scale multi-science research facilities will in Lund form a new hub in northern Europe for advanced photon- and neutron based research within a broad spectrum of disciplines including materials science, life science and structural biology, nano-science and technology, condensed matter physics, chemistry, energy technology, geology, and environmental sciences. Brian Kelly had more work to do in southern California after beating USC on Saturday night. So Notre Dame's head coach stayed in The Golden State through the weekend and found himself in a high school gym on Monday night.Mission Viejo senior Max Redfield, one of Notre Dame?s top remaining targets in the 2013 class, scored 20 points with Kelly and wide receivers coach Mike Denbrock in attendance of his second basketball game of the season.
Redfield said he didn?t get to talk with the coaches too much, because he was busy preparing for and playing in a 91-33 win over North Torrance. But Kelly and Denbrock did visit with Redfield?s mother, stepdad and younger brother before the game.
?My mom said that she liked them both a lot and could tell that they?re really genuine and nice guys,? Redfield said.
?They reiterated all the things that I?d be getting if I went there and how I?d be involved with the team and where I fit in. My parents were pretty impressed.?
Redfield officially visited Notre Dame in October for the Stanford game with a verbal commitment to USC, and has since rescinded his commitment and turned his attention to the Irish, Washington and Oregon.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound prospect visited Washington on Nov. 9 and has yet to set a visit to Oregon.
Since Redfield visited South Bend the Irish have all but secured a spot in the BCS National Championship with an undefeated regular season capped by a victory over the school Redfield was initially committed to. Redfield said the winning has helped Notre Dame a little and he still considers them at the top of his list. ?If I had a number one,? Redfield said, ?it would be Notre Dame.?
Redfield ranks as a four-star prospect with most recruiting services slating him as a top five safety and a top 50 player overall.
LONDON (Reuters) ? For a few hedge funds, Greek debt is turning into one of the trades of the year.
News that Athens ? backed by euro zone ministers and the International Monetary Fund ? will buy back some its own debt from private investors sets a floor under the price of its bonds, handing many who picked them up at rock-bottom levels big gains.
The funds ? which include Daniel Loeb?s Third Point ? have spent months building up positions in the debt-beleaguered country?s bonds, rightly betting that their price would rise as the risk of a Greek exit from the euro zone receded.
Some have already banked profits from that bet, but indications Athens will target a cost of around 35 cents on the euro in its buyback plan, if successful, is a boon for those still holding the bonds.
?This is very positive and a huge step forward,? Achilles Risvas, chief executive officer of hedge fund Dromeus Capital said. ?The probability of a Grexit has decreased significantly.?
Risvas owns Greek bonds currently trading at 28.5 cents on the euro, bonds he bought at 18 and 19 cents.
Hedge funds ? secretive funds that can bet on rising or falling prices in a wide range of markets ? have often played a controversial role in government bond markets.
Many have attracted criticism for betting against the fortunes of European countries ? including Greece ? during the euro zone debt crisis, and prompting Europe to ban ?naked? short-selling of sovereign credit default swaps (CDS), a product that insures the buyer against default.
For most funds their current Greek debt holdings represent a relatively small position of their portfolios, although the gains can be large.
Others are sitting on even bigger gains.
Third Point, a $9.3 billion hedge fund run out of New York, said in a regulatory statement earlier this month Greek government bonds were one of its top five ?Winners? in October.
The fund had bought the bonds for about 17 cents, Loeb told investors in an October 3 letter seen by Reuters.
London-based hedge fund Adelante Asset Management first bought Greek bonds at 12.5 cents. It has sold part of the position, making a 70 percent gain, but CEO Julian Adams said it still has a holding and described the deal as a ?good? one.
Adams said the trade was by no means over. ?Now the country has a chance to go forward on a more sustainable footing? Plus with all the relief they are getting and the cash you should start to get some growth.?
POKER GAME
Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreed on Monday to cut Greece?s towering debt pile by 40 billion euros ($51.72 billion), cutting it to 124 percent of gross domestic product by 2020.
Importantly, ministers also committed to taking further steps to lower Greece?s debt ?significantly below 110 percent? in 2022 ? a veiled acknowledgment that some write-off of loans may be necessary from 2016.
Athens is yet to give details of the debt buyback ? to avoid giving hedge funds an opportunity to push up prices ? but one proposal is to borrow 10 billion euros from the euro zone?s rescue fund.
This would allow Greece to buy around 30 billion euros worth of bonds, cutting its outstanding obligations by around 20 billion euros.
However, the buyback will only work if enough investors agree to sell their bonds ? by no means guaranteed. Some may prefer to stay out of the deal in the hope that others accept the buyback, cutting Greece?s debt and boosting the value of their own bonds.
?Every bondholder will be aware that if they were the only one not to participate then default probabilities plummet, and we think the strip could be valued at around 50 (cents on the euro),? Gabriel Sterne, an economist at Exotix, wrote in a research note.
Dromeus? Risvas said a price of 35 cents was unlikely to encourage him to participate, but that the plan was still positive because it sets a floor to the price and ? depending on the buyback?s size ? it could boost bond prices further.
?It?s like a poker game. You need to understand what everyone else is going to do first,? he said, noting that much depends on how the government proceeds with the buyback.
Using a Dutch auction ? where the price is set after taking in all bids and determining the highest price at which enough investors accept a total buyback ? is likely to elicit more success than a single across-the-board price, Risvas said.
But while markets and hedge funds reacted positively to the plan, huge risks remain and mainstream investors are still cautious about buying into the debt of a country stuck in the depths of a five year long recession.
?You can flip a coin and you might make some money. But other than for hedge funds?it?s very difficult for us to play it,? said Richard Cookson, Global Chief Investment Officer at Citi Private Bank, speaking at Reuters Global Investment 2013 Outlook Summit held in London on Tuesday. If you still have some Thanksgiving leftovers lurking about your fridge, it's time to get creative and use them up. If cranberry sauce is among those leftovers, the folks at CHOW have a creative use for it: use it in a tasty cocktail you can sip while you figure out what to do with the rest of the leftovers.
The video above walks you through the recipe. It's pretty straight forward, and while the cranberry sauce CHOW uses is clearly of the canned, gelatinous variety, we imagine you can do the same with any cranberry sauce, even homemade, as long as it's smooth enough to mix easily. If it's chunky leftover cranberry sauce you're trying to get rid up, a quick hit with an immersion blender (or even a regular blender) should smooth it out enough to give this a whirl.

In the increasingly video driven society of today, many businesses that have not yet caught up to the standard of multimedia promotional efforts of their counterparts are finding market share and customer loyalty decreasing rapidly. No matter how good your product or service, you must build and maintain a visual marketing and branding component to your overall promotion strategy.
The great thing about video production is that it does not have to be expensive or ?polished? in a traditionally professional way. The customer online is looking for personal engagement and individual attention. This is why many of the marketing videos that have gone viral and created instant PR for their companies have been quite low budget. The Internet is the one place in which the small and midsize business can compete with the multinational corporation on an even playing field. Below are some of the characteristics of small and midsize business video production efforts that have proven quite successful in an increasingly cluttered marketing environment.
One ? Comedy works wonders.
Disarming the consumer with humour before hitting them with the hard sales pitch is much more effective online than anywhere else. On average, people are 65% less likely to reblog, re-tweet or otherwise share a video with a sales pitch than a video without one.
This means that in order to create a viral effect, you must disarm the consumer first so that they do not know they are being marketed to. Comedy is one of the most effective ways to do this and create a viral campaign that will eventually bring in loyal customers.
Two ? Videos are short and sweet.
No matter what your message is, brevity is the soul of wit on the Internet. Most viral videos are less than 1 min. in length and have a strong plot line with strong punchlines.
If you can incorporate this type of brevity into your marketing message, you have a much better chance of getting through to your audience than any kind of hard sales pitch.
Three ? Choice of keywords / search engine optimization is much more important than the polished look of a video.
Indexing your video properly online so that it gets to the right eyes is much more boring than the overall polish of your video production. People are much more interested in being personally engaged, so make sure that after you produce your video, you select the right keywords for it on video sharing sites.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals Inc. has recalled dozens of lots of its generic version of cholesterol drug Lipitor because some may contain tiny glass particles, the latest in a string of manufacturing deficiencies that once led U.S. regulators to bar imports of the Indian company's medicines.
Ranbaxy, a subsidiary of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., India's biggest drugmaker, is operating under increased scrutiny from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration because of quality lapses at multiple Ranbaxy factories over the past several years. The FDA also has alleged the company lied about test results for more than two dozen of its generic drugs several years ago.
On Friday, Ranbaxy posted a notice on its U.S. website, saying it's recalling 10-, 20- and 40-milligram doses of tablets of atorvastatin calcium. That's generic Lipitor, the cholesterol fighter that reigned for years as the world's top-selling drug.
The recall includes 41 lots of the drug, nearly all with 90 pills per bottle, but three lots contain 500 pills per bottle. It's unclear how many bottles are in each lot, but medicine batches typically contain many thousands of pills. The 80-milligram strength tablets are not affected.
Ranbaxy spokesman Chuck Caprariello did not answer questions or provide any additional information beyond the statement on the company's website.
"Ranbaxy is proactively recalling the drug product lots out of an abundance of caution," the website statement read. "This recall is being conducted with the full knowledge of the U.S. FDA."
The company also filed a two-sentence statement with the Bombay Stock Exchange stating Ranbaxy's investigation would be completed within two weeks, but that after that temporary disruption to the U.S. supply, the company expected to resume shipments here.
Patients who've filled a prescription can contact their pharmacy to determine whether it was made by Ranbaxy or another generic drugmaker and, if it's from Ranbaxy, whether it came from a recalled lot.
Ranbaxy's manufacturing deficiencies, dating to 2006, led to a lengthy investigation and sanctions by the FDA. During the probe, federal investigators found Ranbaxy didn't properly test the shelf life and other safety factors of its drugs and then lied about the results.
In mid-2008, the FDA barred Ranbaxy from shipping into the U.S more than 30 different drugs made at factories in India. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Justice demanded Ranbaxy turn over internal documents, alleging the company lied about ingredients and formulations of some medications.
In early 2009, the FDA said it would not consider any new applications from Ranbaxy to sell in the U.S. any products made at the troubled factories.
As FDA discussions with Ranbaxy continued, it appeared Ranbaxy would lose its shot at a revenue windfall when Lipitor's generic U.S. patent expired last Nov. 30. At the time, Lipitor brought in almost $8 billion a year in U.S. sales.
As often happens when patents first expire, for the first six months only one generic rival could compete with brand-name Lipitor. Ranbaxy had that right, although an authorized generic from Lipitor maker Pfizer Inc. and partner Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. went on sale on Dec. 1. With competition so limited, the generic prices only declined a bit from brand-name drug's price of about $115 a month ? until several other generics entered the market six months later.
The FDA finally ended the suspense, deciding just before midnight on Nov. 30 to let Ranbaxy sell generic Lipitor made at the company's Ohm Laboratories factory in central New Jersey. It was unclear Friday whether the recalled Ranbaxy pills were made there or elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Ranbaxy is operating under a settlement with the FDA, called a consent decree, signed on Dec. 20, 2011. It requires Ranbaxy to improve manufacturing procedures, ensure data on its products is accurate and undergo extra oversight and review by an independent third party for five years. Ranbaxy at the time set aside $500 million to cover potential criminal and civil liability stemming from the Justice Department investigation.

TACOMA, Washington - An Afghan villager and two of his sons, who survived a night-time shooting rampage in March, testified on Saturday that they saw only one U.S. soldier attacking their compound, backing the U.S. government's account.
A teenager said he had cried out "We are children, we are children" during the attack, but then saw the soldier shoot a child.
Military prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, accusing him of killing 16 villagers, mostly women and children, when he ventured out of his remote camp on two revenge-fueled forays over a five-hour period in March.
The shootings in Afghanistan's Kandahar province marked the worst case of civilian slaughter blamed on an individual U.S. soldier since the Vietnam War and damaged already strained U.S.-Afghan relations.
The U.S. government says a coherent and lucid Bales acted alone and with "chilling premeditation."
Some villagers told reporters shortly after the attacks that more than one U.S. soldier was involved, but sworn statements to that effect have not been made publicly.
Witness: Sgt. Bales, accused of Afghan massacre, was deemed a top soldier
Karilyn Bales, the wife of Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, spoke exclusively with NBC's Matt Lauer, telling the TODAY anchor that the news about her husband is 'very unbelievable.'
Early Saturday, three survivors answered questions via video-link from Kandahar Air Field to a hearing at a U.S. Army base in Washington state - the first time Afghan witnesses have testified under oath about what transpired on March 11.
"He shot me right here," said Haji Mohamed Naim, the father of nine sons in the village of Alkozai, the scene of the first shootings.
Speaking through an interpreter, he said all he could see was a strong light on the head of a soldier who was not more than half a yard away from him when he started shooting.
Naim said he was awoken in the night by sounds of shots and dogs barking, and then children from the next door house knocked on his door. He then described how an "American" jumped from a wall before confronting him and starting to shoot.

Two of Naim's sons, who were also in the compound, said they saw only one U.S. soldier on the night in question.
"Yes, I saw him, he came after me, I went to another room," said Naim's son Sadiquallah, who said he was 13 or 14 years old. He described how he hid behind a curtain in a storage room with one other child, and was hit in the ear with a bullet, but did not see who fired the shot.
"How many Americans did you see?" one of the prosecution attorneys asked Sadiquallah. "One," he replied.
'I saw the American' His older brother Quadratullah, who said he was 14, was unscathed in the attack, but said he saw a U.S. soldier shooting other children.
"Yes I saw the American," he answered a government attorney. "I said 'We are children, we are children', and he shot one of the kids," Quadratullah said, through an interpreter.
"We saw only one American," he added.
At a courtroom at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Bales sat impassively throughout the proceedings, watching the witnesses on a TV screen in front of him.
The Afghan villagers testified on the fifth day of a hearing to establish whether there is enough evidence to put Bales before a court martial.

A veteran of four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Bales faces 16 counts of premeditated murder and six counts of attempted murder, as well as charges of assault and wrongfully possessing and using steroids and alcohol while deployed.
Prosecutors have presented physical evidence to tie Bales to the crime scene, with a forensic investigator saying a sample of blood on Bales' clothes matched a swab taken in one of the compounds where the shooting occurred.
Bales' lawyers have not set out an alternative theory, but have pointed up inconsistencies in testimony and highlighted incidents before the shooting where Bales lost his temper easily or appeared unbalanced, possibly setting up an argument that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Gathering evidence and witness statements was complicated by the speedy burial of victims, the inability of U.S. investigators to access the crime scenes for three weeks after the violence for fears of revenge attacks, and the dispersal of possible witnesses after treatment at a Kandahar hospital.
Bales' lead civil defense attorney John Henry Browne, who is in Kandahar to question the witnesses, complained early in the investigation that his team was denied access to villagers wounded in the attacks.

We all profess our love for things in different ways. For many of us food-obsessed people, that love has been increasingly more frequently displayed with permanent ink. We are talking, of course, about the food tattoo.
In recent years, we've seen tattoos become more prevalent, socially accepted and revered than ever before. In our (possibly skewed) opinion, we think telling the world who you are by tattooing an onion on your skin makes a lot of sense. It's not just vegetables that are getting their due, we found pigs, steaks, recipes, mushrooms and so many cupcakes along the way. And it's not just chefs -- it seems like everyone from food writers to plain old food lovers are getting into the food tattoo game.
We've pulled together a few of our favorites, from friends, family and strangers. Would you ever get a food-related tattoo? Let us know what it would look like in the comments.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An economic calamity looming, President Barack Obama on Friday signaled willingness to compromise with Republicans, declaring he was not "wedded to every detail" of his tax-and-spending approach to prevent deep and widespread pain in the new year. But he insisted his re-election gave him a mandate to raise taxes on wealthier Americans.
"The majority of Americans agree with my approach," said Obama, brimming with apparent confidence in his first White House statement since securing a second term.
Trouble is, the Republicans who run the House plainly do not agree with his plans. Speaker John Boehner insisted that raising tax rates as Obama wants "will destroy jobs in America."
So began the "fiscal cliff" political maneuvering that will determine which elected power center ? the White House or the House ? bends more on its promises to voters. The outcome will affect tens of millions of Americans, given that the tax hikes and budgets cuts set to kick in Jan. 1 could spike unemployment and bring on a new recession.
An exhausting presidential race barely history, Washington was back quickly to governing on deadline, with agreement on a crucial goal but divisions on how to get there. The campaign is over, but another has just begun.
The White House quickly turned Obama's comments into an appeal for public support, shipping around a video by email and telling Americans that "this debate can either stay trapped in Washington or you can make sure your friends and neighbors participate."
Obama invited the top four leaders of Congress to the White House next week for talks, right before he departs on a trip to Asia.
In laying their negotiating markers, all sides sought to leave themselves wiggle room.
"I don't want to box myself in. I don't want to box anybody else in," Boehner said at the Capitol.
Outside all the new the talk of openness, the same hard lines seemed in place.
Obama never expressly said that tax rates on top earners must return to the higher levels of the Bill Clinton era, leading to speculation that he was willing to soften the core position of his re-election campaign to get a grand debt deal with Republicans. "I'm not wedded to every detail of my plan. I'm open to compromise," he said.
But his spokesman, Jay Carney, seemed to slam that door. He said Obama would veto any extension Congress might approve of tax cuts on household incomes above $250,000.
Obama's remarks were choreographed so that a diverse-looking group of Americans stood behind him and dozens more were invited to pack the East Room. In the weeks ahead, he plans to pull in the public as a way to pressure Congress.
"I am not going to ask students and seniors and middle class families to pay down the entire deficit while people like me, making over $250,000, aren't asked to pay a dime more in taxes. I'm not going to do that," said Obama.
He said voters plainly agreed with his approach that both tax hikes and spending cuts are needed to cut the debt.
"Our job now is to get a majority in Congress to reflect the will of the American people," Obama said.
About 60 percent of voters said in exit polls Tuesday that taxes should increase, either for everyone or those making over $250,000. Left unsaid by Obama was that even more voters opposed raising taxes to help cut the deficit.
The scheduled year-end changes, widely characterized as a dangerous "fiscal cliff," include a series of expiring tax cuts that were approved in the George W. Bush administration. The other half of the problem is a set of punitive across-the-board spending cuts, looming only because partisan panel of lawmakers failed to reach a debt deal.
Put together, they could mean the loss of roughly 3 million jobs.
Since the election, Boehner and Obama have both responded to the reality that they need each other.
Compromise has become mandatory if the two leaders are to avoid economic harm and the wrath of a public sick of government dysfunction.
Obama says he is willing to talk about changes to Medicare and Medicaid, earning him the ire of the left. Boehner says he will accept raising tax revenue and not just slashing spending, although he insists it must be done by reworking the tax code, not raising rates. The framework, at least, is there for a broad deal on taxes.
Yet the top Democrat and Republican in the nation are trying to put the squeeze on each other as the public waits for answers.
"This is his opportunity to lead," Boehner said of Obama, not long before the president said: "All we need is action from the House."
Obama said the uncertainty now spooking investors and employers will be shrunk if Congress extends ? quickly ? the tax cuts for all those except the most-well off.
The Senate has passed such a bill. The House showed no interest on Friday in Obama's idea.
Obama and Republicans have tangled over the Bush tax cuts for years. The president gave in to Republican demands to extend the cuts across the board in 2010, but he ran for re-election on a pledge to allow the rates to increase on families making more than $250,000 a year.
Also lurking is the expiration of the nation's debt limit in the coming weeks. The last fight on that nearly led the United States to default on its bills.
When asked if he would try to use that issue as leverage, Boehner said it must be addressed "sooner rather than later."
The national debt now stands above $16 trillion. The government borrowed about 31 cents of every dollar it spent in 2012.

A Christian Science perspective: A Veterans Day tribute to veterans and their families.
By Karl Sandberg / November 9, 2012
Nov. 11 is Veterans Day in the United States. It?s a day that offers an opportunity to pay special tribute to the men and women who have served in the military services. If you know of someone who has served in uniform, or perhaps is serving now, this is a great time to acknowledge their service and say thank you to them.

Reflecting back on my own service in Vietnam, I suspect I was like a lot of soldiers in some respects. I didn?t want to leave my family, I didn?t want to risk getting hurt or killed, but I did want to serve my country. In other respects I was different. I was a chaplain, which meant I was a noncombatant. I didn?t bear arms. My purpose in being there was not to harm anyone, but to offer spiritual ministry to everyone around me, especially to the members of my unit.
Even though it was difficult for any of us to gain much of a military perspective on why we were there or what we were actually accomplishing, what I understood very early in my tour of duty was that the real war was not with the North Vietnamese or the Viet Cong. The real war was with the belief that injustice, domination, hatred, lust, self-gratification, and every form of evil imaginable could overcome integrity, justice, respect, kindness, moral courage, and unselfed love. The real enemy was the belief that being separated from all we held to be good and decent back home could dehumanize us by putting us in a place where selfishness and fear were prevalent ? that we could be made to forget our true nature as sons and daughters of God.
The biggest lesson I learned during that tour was that the only way to defeat the enemy was by demonstrating the moral courage to live according to the standards we were raised with. There is nothing more important in this world than having the conviction that what we are doing with our lives counts, that it has meaning, that we have been able to make the world a better place. In her textbook, ?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? the founder of the Monitor, Mary Baker Eddy, writes, ?[B]lessed is that man who seeth his brother?s need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another?s good? (p. 518). Succeeding in this effort requires sacrifice. The realization of what constitutes this sacrifice has been etched in my heart.
The Master, Christ Jesus, said, ?Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends? (John 15:13). And this is exactly what so many have done over countless generations since the birth of our nation, including the most recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was an honor to minister to such individuals.
I saw so many men and women leaving behind the peace and security of homes, families, and jobs in order to serve their country, placing a sense of duty and what they understood to be the welfare of a nation and a free world above their own comfort and safety. And these noble ambitions didn?t apply just to the soldiers themselves. I also recognized that these same pure desires helped the families left behind to endure, doing their best to uphold the same standards. It made me think that perhaps this is the essence of what is meant by ?keeping the home fires burning.?
Those who find themselves serving in places where they are being called upon to defend others from aggression, hatred, and all the destructive forces of evil, are being motivated by the purest of desires, sacrificing their own well-being to serve and bless their fellow man. This motivation certainly includes our military veterans. But doesn?t it also represent virtually anyone who is striving to achieve the same noble ambition in their own lives, whether they?ve served in uniform or not? In a very real way, isn?t anyone striving to live this kind of life, military or civilian, also a ?veteran? who deserves our deepest respect and gratitude? So, thank you, veterans, military and civilian, for the sacrifices you have made ? sacrifices that are making a difference in the world, defending the rights of everyone to live in peace and harmony.
