Homeowners should know that access panels are very important in home building. Unfortunately, many don't even stop and consider the need for access panels. Without these everything would be exposed and the home would look unfinished.
There are several reasons why the electrical and mechanical systems shouldn't be left out in the open. First of all, it's ugly. One has to consider aesthetics when designing a home after all, and having all the wires and circuits and pipes out in the open can be very unattractive. It gives the home an unfinished and unpolished look, and may even look dirty.
Second, leaving the wires and pipes out can be dangerous. Children like to play with things, and may assume that they can play with these wires as well. The damage can be serious, so it's better to prevent than worry about a cure later on.
As such, it's obvious that we do need access panels in our homes. These can hide electric wires, mechanical systems, and even the plumbing. More importantly, access panels offer easy access, unlike regular walls. This is a necessity especially in times of emergency. Choosing an access panel isn't as simple as it sounds, though. Arm yourself with knowledge and select that panel that suits your needs. Most access panels are categorised according to their material. Although all panels pretty much perform the same functions, the choice of materials is up to you.
Here are the types of access panels to choose from:
1. If you're looking for the sturdiest and most reliable type, get the metal access panels. Steel and aluminium panels fall under this category. They are sturdy but tend to be rather heavy. Given their reliable nature, ceilings often use metal access panels to increase safety. Commercial establishments favour metal access panels. However, they do tend to be more expensive.
2. Plasterboard access panels are the next best thing. These panels are less expensive than metal ones, but are generally very sturdy as well. However, plasterboard access panels are usually unfinished. The buyer will have to plaster and paint it. Though it's additional work, it also allows the buyer to paint the access panel in a way that would match the interior decoration. Plasterboard access panels are used on ceilings and walls. They are the most common choice for homes.
3. Plastic panels are not as sturdy as metal or plasterboard access panels, but they are perfect for bathroom use. The plastic is water resistant. Unfortunately, it's not very sturdy. Nevertheless, it is one of the cheapest available, and can be quite cost efficient even.
Whatever the material, though, the most important is to check the fire rating of the panel. Most panels these days are already fire rated, but there are still non-fire rated ones out in the market. You can purchase fire rated versions of the types of access panel mentioned above. Make sure that you pick a panel whose fire rating is quite similar to the fire rating of the walls and ceiling surrounding it.
DIY is great, but sometimes professional help is needed. Don't hesitate to ask for assistance.
