3 die in shooting, fiery crash on Las Vegas Strip

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Three people died in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip early on Thursday when one or more gunmen in a Range Rover sport utility vehicle opened fire on a Maserati, killing the driver and touching off a fiery multi-car crash.

The driver of the Maserati died in the pre-dawn shooting, and his car veered out of control and smashed into a taxi carrying two people, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Officer Jose Hernandez said.

The cab exploded into flames in the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road, a popular tourist area in front of several casino resorts, killing the driver and a passenger.

"There was a loud bang and I hear two other booms. I looked out my window at Caesars Palace ... and could see the fireball," witness John Lamb was quoted as saying on the website of Las Vegas KLAS-TV's 8News Now.

The gunfire and collision in the busy intersection near the Bellagio and Caesars Palace hotels triggered another crash involving four other vehicles. At least four people were hurt including a passenger in the Maserati, and the Range Rover sped from the scene, Hernandez said.

Authorities declined to identify any of the victims but the Las Vegas Review Journal newspaper and KLAS-TV identified the driver of the Maserati as aspiring rapper Kenneth Cherry Jr. YouTube videos of his music show him rapping from a silver Maserati while cruising the Las Vegas Strip.

Attorney Vicki Greco, who has represented Cherry for what she described as minor traffic issues and in a civil case, told Reuters she had been in touch with his family and friends and that they were "devastated" by the news that he had been killed.

"I have not been to the coroner ... From what I have heard, Yes, I can confirm. But I haven't been officially notified," Greco said, adding she believed it was him from news photos that showed the car.

'ARMED AND DANGEROUS'

Police said the shooting was believed to have stemmed from a fight in the valet area of the Aria Resort and Casino on the Strip, but investigators had not established a motive.

Representatives for MGM Resorts International, which owns the Aria, declined to comment on specifics of the incident but said it was working closely with police on the investigation.

A hospital spokeswoman said three people had been treated and released at University Medical Center after the incident but declined to provide information about a fourth person.

Clark County Sheriff Douglas Gillespie told a news conference that police had few leads on the Range Rover or its occupants, who were considered "armed and dangerous," but had launched a multi-state search and were seeking help from the public.

The sheriff bristled at suggestions that the outburst of gun violence could call into question the safety of the Strip, which attracts millions of visitors every year.

"I have been asked by many of you this morning, ?Is the Las Vegas Strip safe?'" Gillespie said. "Yes it is."

"Las Vegas is a valley of 2 million people. Forty million tourists visit here a year. We have 153,000 hotel rooms. In order for my police organization and other law enforcement organizations in the valley to keep this community safe, we have to work very closely not only with the community but the resort corridor as well," he said.

The incident occurred near to where rapper Tupac Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight after the two men had attended a Mike Tyson boxing match.

Shakur, 25, was hit by gunfire from at least one assailant in a Cadillac while sitting in Knight's car at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane and died six days later at University Medical Center. The crime remains unsolved.

Chevrolet SS Sedan Not Heading to Canada

The all-new Chevrolet SS sedan will not be heading to Canada, General Motors has confirmed.

Going on sale later this year in America, Canadians won?t be able to enjoy the new 415 hp, 415 lb-ft of torque SS that?s powered by the American automaker?s 6.2-liter V8 engine.

The announcement comes as a surprise to those north of the border as the car?s predecessor, the Pontiac G8, was offered in the true north strong and free.

The SS sedan won?t be the only model that has a discrepancy between the American and Canadian markets. In Canada, Chevrolet offers the Trax and Orlando, both of which aren?t available in America. But in this case, Canada is definitely getting the short end of the stick. Americans surely aren?t sulking over not being able to buy a Trax or Orlando.

FCC proposal hopes to grow WiFi spectrum by 35 percent, reduce hotspot congestion

Sick of overloaded public WiFi? So is the FCC. Back at CES FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said we were heading for a WiFi "traffic jam," and promised to work with Government agencies to score public networks a little extra spectrum. In an effort to make good on the pledge, the FCC has now proposed a 195 megahertz expansion of the 5GHz band, giving unlicensed wireless devices (that would be your tablets, laptops, phones etc) a little bandwidth to share. The move would give devices a wider channel, which should translate to faster connection speeds. It isn't all just for the sake of your local coffee shop's network congestion, however -- the proposal also fulfills requirements laid out by the Middle Class Tax Relief and Jobs Creation Act of 2012, which called for expanding spectrum for unlicensed use. Sounds like a winning move to us. Check out the FCC's official press announcement after the break.

The Sims 3 Patch v1.47.6 to v1.50.56 for Windows [Disc]

This incremental patch will update the global PC disc edition of The Sims 3 from version 1.47.6.020002 to version 1.50.56.021002.

IMPORTANT: The Super Patcher is designed to work with the base game of any version number and any game region. After applying the cumulative patch your base game will be brought to version 1.42.130. To verify the base game version number, run the launcher and then hover the mouse pointer over the base game icon located in the bottom left corner of the launcher window.

Note that the standalone cumulative patch is self executable, meaning you can simply download it to your Windows desktop or elsewhere and run the setup installer directly. Other than ensuring that the game and launcher are not running, no further setup is required.

If you should receive a patch error message stating that the installed version of the game could not be determined, it is advised that you run the patcher as an administrator. You can do this by logging into Windows via an administrator account or by right-clicking on the patch installer and then selecting "Run as Administrator."

Before installing an Update for The Sims 3, an Expansion Pack, or a Stuff Pack, it is a good idea to run through the following checklist to ensure your game continues to work smoothly.
If you have any questions about the below steps, please visit the Technical Support forum on the official Sims 3 community found at this URL: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/forums/show/10.page

Step 1: Disable Custom Content
Custom Content is all Sims content that did not come from an official The Sims 3 Update, The Sims 3 Store, Expansion Pack, or Stuff Pack. Custom Content is created by 3rd Party Developers that are not regulated by Electronic Arts or The Sims 3 Development Team and may not work with new updates. Custom Content may cause the game to behave unexpectedly or not function entirely.
To disable your custom content, undo whatever you did to install this content to get your game back into an unmodified state. If you placed it in a Sims 3 directory folder, move it to a new folder that is outside your Sims 3 file directory. Your Sims 3 file directory can be found using the paths listed below:
Windows File Directory: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3
Mac File Directory: User/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims/
Once you have installed the official update you may re-enable your custom content. If you experience problems, disable it again until the 3rd party developer updates their content to work with the official Update, Expansion Pack, or Stuff Pack.

Step 2: Back Up your Save Files
It???s always a good precaution to back up your save files before installing an Expansion Pack, Update, or Stuff Pack. To do this, copy the ???.sims3??? folders found in the Saves folder onto your desktop or another file directory.
Your Sims 3 Saves folder can be found using the paths listed below:
Windows File Directory: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Saves
Mac File Directory: User/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims/Saves
After the Update is installed, run the game to verify your saves still function correctly.

Step 3: Let the Update Complete Entirely
Updates can sometimes be rather large and may take a while to download and install completely. Cancelling the update before it has completed may cause unexpected problems, so it is always best to let it finish entirely. Do not close the Launcher until you have confirmed the update is completely installed, as this will cancel the update.

Public's View of Marco Rubio Mixed

The public's view of Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is mixed, according to a new poll conducted in the days after the Florida senator delivered the Republican response to President Obama's State of the Union address.

A Pew Research Center poll released today shows 26 percent of those polled viewed Rubio favorably, while 29 percent held an unfavorable opinion of the Florida senator. Forty-six percent said they were unable to offer a rating for Rubio.

Rubio, 41, garnered a higher favorability rating - 49 percent - from those who identified as Republican, while GOPers who align themselves with the Tea Party gave him a much higher favorability rating: 70 percent.

The poll was conducted Thursday through Sunday, days after the Feb. 12 State of the Union.

Rubio has gained plenty of attention since his response to the address, in large part because of the sip of water he took mid-speech. While he has served as fodder for the late-night comedy circuit, Rubio was able to turn the mishap into a financial boon, raising $160,000 by selling more than 5,000 Rubio water bottles through his PAC, Reclaim America, in just one week, a source close to Rubio said.

The Florida senator, who many consider to have presidential ambitions for 2016, has also played a large role in the Senate's push for immigration overhaul. Over the weekend, Rubio described Obama's leaked draft on immigration overhaul as "dead on arrival."

Rubio recently criticized the White House for not reaching out to him to discuss immigration, but the president called Rubio and other Republican senators who are working on an immigration plan Tuesday.

What we know about the death of a Mossad agent named 'Prisoner X' ? and what we don't

Ben Zygier ? aka Ben Alon, Ben Allen, Benjamin Burrows and "Prisoner X" ? died in an secret Israeli prison cell in late 2011. Why was he there? Mr. Zygier, who'd emigrated to Israel from his native Australia about 10 years previously, had worked for the Mossad, Israel's external spy agency and something went wrong.

What went wrong? So far, his alleged crimes remain only a matter of conjecture. Israel asserts that Zygier was a threat to national security. How did he die? Israel says Zygier hanged himself with a bed sheet tied to a shower spout in his cell after almost nine months of mostly solitary confinement.

In a Dec. 2012 report released to the public today, an Israeli judge found that Zygier's death was a result of negligence by the Israeli Prison Service, since he was deemed a suicide risk.

Zygier's case, which the Israeli press was forbidden from reporting on for nearly two years, until the Australian Broadcasting Corp. broke the story of his detention and death early this month, prompts a litany of questions: About the practice of Mossad recruiting recent immigrants, and convincing them to spy on behalf of the country; about the extent to which basic legal protections can be overridden in Israel when the security authorities insist an individual is a threat to national security; and about what Zygier had done when he was in the Mossad's good graces, and what he did to fall out of favor.

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about Israel?

The press has been full of theories about why Zygier was secretly jailed (not even his jailers were allowed to know his name), and why Israel continues to remain mum to its own public about his life and death. One theory that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office sought to lay to rest today was that Zygier had reached out to Australian intelligence, perhaps in remorse at how Australian passports have been used to conduct espionage and assassinations by Mossad (the Israeli assassination team that killed Hamas leader Mohamed Mabhouh in Dubai in 2010 used a number of foreign passports obtained from immigrants, including Australian ones). Mr. Netanyahu's office shot down that theory yesterday, writing that Zygier "had no connection to Australian security agencies."

But what was the reason Israel decided to disappear a young Jew who had emigrated to the country and agreed to join its clandestine service? These are, after all, the sorts of immigrants Israel is desperate to attract. No explanation has so far been provided. He was disappeared into his secret prison cell less than a month after the Mabhouh killing in Dubai, leading to speculation he was somehow involved. But anything solid so far? No.

Nor has there been a full accounting of the conditions of Zygier's detention. Most people who've experienced solitary confinement for long periods describe it as a form of torture that, when coupled with the fear and uncertainty of secret detention, are enough to push some people over the edge. The Israeli coroner's report says Zygier had traces of a sedative in his system at the time of his death, and a lawyer who met him a few days before said he seemed neither agitated nor depressed, given his circumstances.

Zygier's many aliases were made easier by Australian rules that allow one name change a year. Since the name "Zygier" might appear Jewish, he was encouraged to pick names like "Allen" and "Burrows" that did not, which allowed him to travel to countries like Iran and Syria under false pretenses to spy on behalf of Israel.

But in 2009, his frequent name-changing ? and the fact that it was common knowledge that Israel's spy agencies recruit Jews in countries like Australia in order to take advantage of their passports ? piqued the interest of Australia's intelligence service. In late 2009 Australian reporter Jason Koutsoukis, then working for Fairfax, received an anonymous tip that three Australians were using their identities to work for the Mossad, which had a front company selling equipment to Iran.

The source gave Mr. Koutsoukis Zygier's name and Koutsoukis spoke to him multiple times, including immediately after the assassination in Dubai. While Zygier denied the spying allegations, Australian intelligence officials confirmed to the reporter in early 2010 that three Australians who had become Israelis were being investigated for espionage. Koutsoukis published a story following after receiving that confirmation, and Zygier was whisked into secret detention soon after. Were Israel's spymasters angry and worried that he'd taken calls from a reporter at all? Or concerned that Zygier might be nabbed by Australia's security services, and so acted first? Possible.

And that brings us to the most troubling aspect of Zygier's case, at least for many Israelis. Over the years, thousands of Palestinians have been held for extended periods of time without a trial or indictment on the sole basis of assertions from senior commanders that they are a threat to "security." While this, known as administrative detention, is quite common in the case of Palestinians, it is unusual for Israel to suspend due process for Israelis. Now, those sorts of methods appear to have trickled down to an Israeli citizen.

Report: Chinese army tied to widespread US hacking

Carlos Barria / Reuters

A general view of 'Unit 61398,' a secretive Chinese military unit on the outskirts of Shanghai on Feb. 19. The unit is believed to be behind a series of hacking attacks, a U.S. computer security company said, prompting a strong denial by China and accusations that it was in fact the victim of U.S. hacking.

By Ed Flanagan, Producer, NBC News

BEIJING ? A group of hackers linked to the Chinese military has stolen reams of sensitive data from more than 100 prominent American companies and organizations, according to an explosive new report.

?The details we have analyzed during hundreds of investigations convince us that the groups conducting these activities are based primarily in China and that the Chinese Government is aware of them,? U.S. computer-security firm Mandiant Corp. said in a?74-page report released on Tuesday.

The story was first reported by?The New York Times.

One group originating from China that Mandiant had been tracking since 2006 and identified in the study as ?APT1? allegedly swiped data from 141 companies in 20 industries ranging from aerospace to telecommunications, according to the report. More than 110 of those companies were American, according to Mandiant.

Mandiant said that the data suggests that the hacker group was either working for or sponsored by China?s People?s Liberation Army. Indeed, according to the organization?s information, APT1?s activity originated from a People?s Liberation Army cyberware division known as ?Unit 61398.?

?Our research found that People?s Liberation Army (PLA?s) Unit 61398 is similar to APT1 in its mission, capabilities, and resources,? it said, according to the report. ??PLA Unit 61398 is also located in precisely the same area from which APT1 activity appears to originate.?

Mandiant said that the hacking originated from a drab 12-story office building on the outskirts of Shanghai. Hundreds, maybe even thousands, of operatives performed covert corporate espionage and extracted trade secrets, blueprints, pricing data and other corporate information from countless American servers from the innocuous tower, according to?Mandiant.

The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times reported on Thursday that Chinese hackers repeatedly penetrated their computer systems. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

The hackers used techniques like ?spear-phishing? -- using spoof emails to trick users into granting access to internal servers --demonstrating a strong proficiency in the English language and advanced understanding of computer security and network operations, the organization said.

Media blackout
Though the story exploded on Twitter and in the foreign news media, it has hardly made any waves in China. Twitter has long been blocked in the country and foreign media companies that broadcast on the mainland like CNN were blacked out when the report was mentioned on air.?

Coverage of Mandiant?s report was also absent from Chinese news websites, but some discussion of the report could still be found on China?s Twitter-like service, Weibo.

?Chinese hackers are so capable! I always thought Americans are very powerful!? exclaimed one user.

?Reports by foreign media cannot be fully trusted,? warned another user, ?but there must be something.?

Related:?Wall Street Journal infiltrated by Chinese hackers

This was a sentiment partly shared by China?s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hong Lei, who responded today to questions about the hacking report by calling them ?groundless? and reiterating the government?s unwavering position on the matter.

?To make groundless accusations based on some rough material is neither responsible nor professional,? he said, before noting that China was also the victim of hacking attacks.

Hong also argued that the new evidence provided by Mandiant and the New York Times will not withstand closer scrutiny.

But China?s cyber activities have been under increasingly closer scrutiny in recent weeks, as a slew of news stories have come out about Beijing?s reported hacking ambitions. Last month, the New York Times reported that its own servers had been attacked by hackers originating in China, possibly in response to an embarrassing expose it published?showing the hidden riches of out-going Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao.

While the White House has largely remained silent on the hacking issue -- President Barack Obama mentioned hacking in his State of the Union but did not specifically cite China -- the government has been noticeably increasing efforts to strengthen cyber security.

Last week Obama issued an Executive Order calling for the improving of critical infrastructure tied to cyber security. That the move came on the eve of the publication of two similar exposes -- last week Bloomberg printed another story demonstrating PLA hacking of American systems -- suggests the administration could be taking a long called for tougher stance on Chinese hacking by ?naming and shaming? known mainland hacking groups. ?

Yen resumes fall after G20, U.S. holiday thins trade

LONDON (Reuters) - The yen resumed falling on Monday after Japan signaled it would push ahead with expansionist monetary policies having escaped criticism from the world's 20 biggest economies at the weekend.

Industrial metals also dipped and European shares were soft on lingering worries about the economic outlook, especially for the euro zone. While the risk of an inconclusive outcome in Italy's forthcoming election added to investor concerns.

However, activity was curtailed by the closure of markets in the United States for the Presidents' Day holiday.

The yen, which has dropped 20 percent against the dollar since mid-November, fell further after financial leaders from the G20 promised not to devalue their currencies to boost exports and avoided singling out Japan for any direct criticism.

The dollar rose 0.5 percent to 93.95 yen, near a 33-month peak of 94.47 yen set a week ago. The euro added 0.3 percent to 125.40 yen, to be midway between Friday's two-week low of 122.90 and a 34-month high of 127.71 yen hit earlier this month.

Strategists said the yen was likely to stay weak, though its decline could lose momentum until it becomes clear who will be taking the helm at the Bank of Japan when the current governor steps down on March 19.

"The yen probably will weaken a little further in anticipation of more aggressive easing under a new leadership team at the Bank of Japan," said Julian Jessop, chief global economist at Capital Economics.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is poised to nominate the new governor in the next few days. Sources have told Reuters that former financial bureaucrat Toshiro Muto, considered likely to be less radical than other candidates, was leading the field.

Meanwhile the euro dipped slightly against the dollar when European Central Bank president Mario Draghi said the currency's recent gains made any rise in inflation less likely and added that he had yet to see any improvement in the euro zone economy.

Speaking before the European Parliament, Draghi said the euro's exchange rate was not a policy target but was important for growth and stability, adding that appreciation of the euro "is a risk".

The comments left the euro down 0.2 percent at $1.3334.

Elsewhere in the currency market, sterling hit a seven-month low against the dollar, after a key policymaker made comments about the need for further weakness and recent poor data which has kept alive worries of another British recession.

Sterling fell 0.25 percent to $1.5476 having earlier touched $1.5438, its lowest since July 13.

DATA LOOMS

A big week for data on the outlook for the world's economy weighed on other riskier asset markets following the recent dire fourth-quarter growth numbers for the euro zone and Japan, along with Friday's soft U.S. manufacturing figures.

In European markets, attention is focused on the euro area Purchasing Managers' Indexes for February and German sentiment indices due later in the week which could affect hopes for a recovery this year.

Analysts expect Thursday's euro area flash PMI indices, which offer pointers to economic activity around six months out, to show growth stabilizing across the recession-hit region, leaving intact hopes for a recovery in the second half of 2013.

Concerns over an inconclusive outcome in the Italian election on Sunday and Monday have added to the weaker sentiment as a fragmented parliament could hamper a future government's efforts to reform the struggling economy.

The worries about the outlook for Italy were encouraging investors back into safe-haven German government bonds on Monday, with 10-year Bund yields easing 3.5 basis points to be around 1.63 percent.

"Political uncertainty will keep Bunds well bid this week," ING rate strategist Alessandro Giansanti said, adding that only better than expected economic data could create selling pressure on German debt in the near term.

Italian 10-year yields were 4 basis points higher on the day at 4.41 percent.

EARNINGS HIT

European equity markets were taking their lead from corporate earnings reports which have been reflecting the sluggish economic conditions across the region.

Danish brewer Carlsberg , which generates just over 60 percent of its sales in western Europe, became the latest to report a weaker-than-expected quarterly profit, sending its shares to their lowest level in almost a month.

The 5.8-percent drop for shares in the world's fourth biggest brewery helped send the FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares down 0.2 percent. Germany's DAX <.gdaxi>, France's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Britain's FTSE-100 <.ftse> ranged between 0.4 percent up and 0.15 percent lower.

Earlier, the G20 statement and subsequent comment from Prime Minster Abe indicating a renewed drive to stimulate the Japanese economy lifted the Nikkei stock index <.n225> by 2.1 percent, near to its highest level since September 2008.

MSCI's world equity index <.miwd00000pus> was flat as markets extended a two-week period of consolidation that has followed the big run-up in January, when demand was buoyed by the efforts of central banks to stimulate the world economy.

Data from EPFR Global, a U.S.-based firm that tracks the flows and allocations of funds globally, shows investors pulled $3.62 billion from U.S. stock funds in the latest week, the most in 10 weeks after taking a neutral stance the prior week.

But demand for emerging market equities remained strong, with investors putting $1.81 billion in new cash into stock funds, the fund-tracking firm said.

CHINA RETURN

In the commodity markets, traders played catch-up after a week-long holiday last week in China, the world's second biggest consumer of many raw materials, which had kept activity subdued, with worries about the economic outlook weighing on sentiment.

Copper, for which China is the world's largest consumer, dipped to a near three-week low at $8,125.25 a metric ton (1.1023 tons) on the London futures market. Benchmark tin and nickel also touched three-week lows.

Gold managed to edge away from six-month lows as jewelers in China returned to the physical market after the Lunar New Year holiday but a lack of demand from U.S. markets saw the precious metal slip back to be down 0.1 percent to $1,607.06 an ounce.

Crude oil markets were mostly steady after the weak U.S. industrial production data on Friday [ID:nL1N0BF44A] was seen dampening demand, while tensions in the Middle East lent some support.

"We continue to see a mixed picture out of the United States. Industry output was lower than expected but that shouldn't affect the general upward direction," Olivier Jakob, analyst at Geneva-based Petromatrix, said.

Brent crude was down 20 cents at $117.46 a barrel after posting its first weekly loss since the first half of January. U.S. crude slipped 24 cents to $95.62.

Maricopa County attorney: I'm not targeting immigrants | Arizona ...

Maricopa County?s top attorney says an aggressive prosecution tool that can leave illegal immigrants stranded in jail for months before the cases go to trial has helped reduce Arizona?s record identity theft issues.

County Attorney Bill Montgomery said the prosecutions abide by state law. His remarks followed allegations Friday that his office has brought excessive charges against immigrants with false documents while letting college students with fake IDs off the hook.

Under state law, illegal immigrants found with fake identification documents can face felony charges of forgery and false identity that bar them from posting bail. Illegal immigrants convicted of felonies are turned over to federal immigration officials once the criminal case is resolved. Serious criminal convictions can make it nearly impossible for a person to obtain legal status in the United States.

Immigration activists say it?s unfair to charge working immigrants with felonies, while college students found with fake IDs at bars rarely face charges.

The charges against illegal immigrants are an ?unconscionable application of the law,? attorney Antonio Bustamante said during a news conference organized by the League of United Latin American Citizens outside Superior Court Friday morning.

The activists demanded less severe penalties, saying the arrests can result in months of jail time.

?Evenhanded justice is all we are asking for,? said lawyer David Cutrer, who recently represented a man charged with identity theft and forgery after being arrested during a job-site raid. The 72-year-old warehouse worker spent six months in jail waiting for his trail to begin, Cutrer said. He was found not guilty, Cutrer said.

Montgomery quickly scheduled his own press conference to defend his office. He denied that his office had sought the serious charges to ensure immigrants would be turned over to federal officials and deported.

?We target conduct,? Montgomery said. ?We don?t target people.?

Employment-related fraud makes up the majority of Arizona?s identity theft complaints, compared to bank fraud, credit card fraud and government benefits fraud. Since 2008, employment-related fraud complaints have dropped from nearly 3,000 cases to fewer than 1,000 in 2011, according to Montgomery.

Arizona was first in the nation for identity theft complaints in 2008, but dropped to fourth in 2011.

In 2006, Arizona voters approved a law that denied bail to illegal immigrants charged with serious crimes, such as kidnapping, human smuggling and gang activity.

Montgomery said identity theft is as serious a crime as those dangerous offenses because victims can spend months clearing their identity.

?The harm can be very real,? he said.

Montgomery said the state?s identity theft law prohibits using the statute to prosecute offenders under the age of 21.

People arrested for identity theft spend 90 days in jail on average while waiting for the case to be resolved, Montgomery said. In the majority of cases, suspects agree to a plea bargain for a lesser crime.

Montgomery said he doesn?t initially charge immigrants with the lesser crime, which would allow them to post bail, because he wants to deter other offenders.

In all, 312 people were convicted of employment-related identity theft last year, Montgomery said.

The immigration proponents said they called attention to the issue after Tempe police put out a press release this week boasting that more than 1,700 fake IDs used by minors were seized in 2012.

?We say, ?oh, they are just kids being kids,?? Cutrer said, noting that illegal immigrants are not afforded the same treatment.

Connecticut shooter wanted to top Norway death toll: CBS

(Reuters) - The man who shot dead 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school wanted to kill more people than the 77 slain by a Norwegian man in a 2011 rampage, CBS News reported on Monday, citing unnamed law enforcement sources.

A Connecticut state police spokesman dismissed the report as inaccurate speculation.

Adam Lanza, 20, who killed himself as police closed in on him at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, saw himself in direct competition with Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a bombing and shooting attack in Norway on July 22, 2011, CBS said. Breivik surrendered to police.

Citing two officials briefed on the Newtown investigation, CBS said Lanza targeted the elementary school because he saw it as the "easiest target" with the "largest cluster of people."

The report did not say how the investigators learned of Lanza's desire to compete with Breivik.

Lanza was also motivated by violent videogames and had spent numerous hours playing games and working on his computer shooting skills in a private gaming room in his basement with blacked out windows, CBS said. Investigators recovered a large number of games from the basement, the report said.

Evidence shows that in his mind, Lanza was likely acting out the fantasies of a videogame during his shooting spree with each death amounting to some kind of "score," CBS said.

Lanza killed 20 schoolchildren aged 6 and 7 plus six adults who worked at the school, shocking the United States and leading President Barack Obama to propose new gun-control legislation.

Authorities have not publicly spoken of his motive.

"This is not official Connecticut State Police information and is someone's speculation regarding the case," Connecticut State Police Lieutenant Paul Vance told Reuters in an email statement.

When asked if the CBS report was in any way accurate, Vance responded, "No."

Breivik, a self-styled warrior against Muslim immigration, killed eight people by bombing the Oslo government headquarters and then shot dead 69 people at the ruling party's summer youth camp.

A Norwegian judge last year sentenced Breivik to the maximum 21 years in prison, though his release can be put off indefinitely should he be deemed a threat to society.

Something About Japan: Hideo Kojima on his Revengeance world tour

With about a week to go until Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance hits stores in Japan, North America and Europe (21, 19 and 22 February respectively), Konami staged a special event in Tokyo for one final push ? and the stars included Konami?s Hideo Kojima alongside producer Atsushi Inaba, creative producer Yuji Korekado and art director Yoji Shinkawa, all of Platinum Games.

The event was held on 13 February at 246Common, a newish outdoor farmers market and food court in Tokyo?s swanky Omotesando area. Dressed in full-length down jackets in front of a steadily more freezing crowd, the group of design veterans detailed special meet and greet sessions to be held around the world over the coming weeks, revealed the game?s advertising campaign and shared stories on its development, reports Japanese site 4gamer.

?Look! It?s perfectly complete!? exclaimed Kojima, praising Platinum Games? technical skill in pulling off the game that his own Kojima Productions studio had failed to produce. ?I thought the day would never come,? responded Inaba, adding that it had been a burden to carry the Metal Gear flag during development. ?But we tried to have fun as we made the game,?and in the end the whole studio was glad to have taken it on.?

The Revengeance World Tour will hit nine cities around the world: London, Madrid, Berlin, Milan, Paris, Tokyo, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Los Angeles. The Fab Four will split into groups of two, with Kojima and Shinkawa attending promo events in Europe, and Inaba and Korekado handling the rest.

The first event will be held on 18 February in a GameStop store on Universal Studios Blvd in Los Angeles, with an autograph session, T-shirt giveaway and live music courtesy of the game?s composer Jamie Christopherson. Similar events are confirmed for 20 February in Mexico City and 22 February at London?s Westfield White City and in Buenos Aires.

Meanwhile, lower-key launch events in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka and Sapporo will feature a lottery,?with prizes such as luxury Metal Gear iPhone cases and phone straps, with cute cardboard Raiden masks given to everyone who attends.

Kojima unveiled two Japanese TV spots for Revengeance, in which a student and an office assistant are constantly badgered until their frustration triggers an explosion of Raiden-like violence (you can watch them above and on the next page). ?We all face lots of little stresses every day, so I want people to find relief with this game,? Kojima explained.?The ads started airing in Japan that same day.

He also said that the North American adverts will be similar: ?Although there are differences in national traits between Japan and the US, the basic feeling of pent-up frustration is the same, so both sets of ads will feature people ?becoming? Raiden.?

Golf-Beljan turns fan after outshining Mickelson, Els

By Mark Lamport-Stokes

PACIFIC PALISADES, California | Sun Feb 17, 2013 2:03am GMT

PACIFIC PALISADES, California Feb 16 (Reuters) - American Charlie Beljan had the time of his life at the Northern Trust Open on Saturday, outscoring his playing partners Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els before getting both men to sign his cap.

Just three months after winning his maiden PGA Tour title despite suffering a panic attack midway through the tournament, Beljan enjoyed an adrenaline-filled day in dazzling sunshine at Riviera Country Club in the company of two Hall of Famers.

"When I got the text last night, my heart started pounding," Beljan told reporters about his high-profile grouping for the third round. "Two years ago I was playing the Gateway Tour, then lucky enough last year to get on the PGA Tour and get a victory.

"To tee it up with Mr. Els and Mr. Mickelson and to have a day like I did is something that I'll never forget. I had them both sign my visor and I'll put it in a nice frame at home so I'll always have something to remember."

Beljan, who won the Children's Miracle Network Classic in November after suffering heart palpitations and shortness of breath during the second round, fired a sparkling three-under-par 68 in tricky scoring conditions on Saturday.

He covered the difficult back nine in a blistering four-under 32 and ended the day in a tie for seventh at seven under, having outshone four-times major winners Mickelson (72) and Els (73) in front of huge galleries at Riviera.

A smiling Beljan agreed when a reporter suggested to him that the two heavyweight players had, in all likelihood, very rarely been asked for an autograph by a fellow player.

"They probably aren't, but hey, I'll ask," the 28-year-od grinned. "What's the worst they are going to tell me? No? But it was very kind for them both to do that. I appreciated it and they didn't have any issue."

Beljan, who had missed the cut in his previous four starts on the 2013 PGA Tour, was delighted to rebound from two bogeys on his front nine with a strong four-birdie run after the turn.

"I could have birdied every hole on the back nine realistically without making more than a 15 or 20-footer," he said.

"These greens are tough. I wish I could have had a few more putts drop but I've got a great chance tomorrow and I look forward to it," added Beljan, who trails pacesetting American Bill Haas by five strokes.

"If you told me I was going to shoot three under par today, or if I was going to shoot even par, I would have been thrilled to death. I'm ecstatic, I'm happy. Life's good." (Reporting by Mark Lamport-Stokes; Editing by Frank Pingue)

How would you deal with this?

At my son's school (he's just turned 5 and is in preschool, but next year he'll be with the same kids...it's a Montessori class). There's a woman who works where I do who is a lesbian, who is "partnered" to another woman, with an adopted daughter. And I just recently learned that her little girl is not only at my son's school, but next year will be in his class.

Now I don't expect them to be discussing their parents much. But at some point he'll see or hear that she has "two mommies." And it will simply be undiscussed in that setting...it'll just be another one of those normal things that really isn't any big deal. But he calls things as he sees them and will surely ask "Why does this girl say she has two mommies?"

So what's the compassionate but principled way to explain that to a 5 year old? It's of course not the only thing that will need explaining...eventually he'll meet kids with unmarried parents and the like...but at least there it could be explained away as "well they just aren't married yet" or some such thing.

Anyway, this just drives home to me that this is unavoidable in our enlightened, modern society and I can't be naive in assuming that we can avoid it if we just close our eyes. Perhaps something as simple as "We don't think that's right, but we can still be friends and just not talk about it..." etc.

Has anyone faced this yet? How did you address it? Or how would you?

Hi Ignatius 21 - Thats such an interesting question. (by the way, Im a new roman catholic, lurking on other forums, lol!) As someone who plans on raising her kids hopefully as Catholics (if their dad allows!) I know I will come up against the same thing. My problem is compounded by the fact that I have always had gay/lesbian friends, and a very close brother in law who I love very much who is a gay man with a partner - and I never, in my heart, could feel it is wrong - but I know what my faith teaches and understand about Gods will in terms of man and woman etc.

I think you are on the right track with what you said - something along the lines of "all families are different. We dont believe that their should be two mommies - but we must always be kind to people, even if we dont like what they are doing".

Another way to think about it - some kids have 2 mommies or daddys and its not because of gay/lesbian relationships. I knew someone who grew up with mom and aunt, from the time she was little, called them both "mom!" You can avoid the gay lesbian issue, focusing on how all families differ.

Sometimes children don't have a daddy with them. Or a mommy with them. Sometimes children are raised by their grandparents, or an aunt and uncle. Mommy and I love you very much, and children who do not have a daddy or a mommy are also loved very much by the people who take care of them. Sometimes it is sad that their daddy or mommy is not with them, so it's not ok to talk about it to them. (and probably leave it at that.)

As Choirfiend says --------

that's an explanation that a 5 yr old would be able to understand .

The question make come up more than once - so you just repeat the explanation each time - eventually it will sink in

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all that is seen and unseen. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father. Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father through Him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered and was buried;
On the the third day, He rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures ; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father;
He will come again in glory to judge the living and dead. And His kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father, with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, He has spoken through the prophets. I believe In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

IMO if a child is old enough to ask the question you have to give them an age appropriate answer because if you don't someone else will. I would keep it simple and possitive and only deal with the question at hand. Deal with the other relationship sceanarios as they come up. By keeping it possitive I would just explain what God's perfect will is, and that is when a man and a woman love each other they get married and then start having children. Anyother way isn't God's way and we all need to keep looking to God to stay on track and even if other's don't we still have to be kind. Especially to the class mate who has the two mommies.

Speaking about what the state tolerates and encourages, a society that is always trying to make square pegs fit into round holes can't stand. In the end, you simply cannot have education together that openly defies such fundamental truths about the human family and what is normal. In the end, if we cannot politically prevent such "education" then the only choice will be to withdraw our children or accept that they are deliberately being taught the opposite of what we want to teach (which is generally speaking not something Orthodox parents should accept - EVER). They will be indoctrinated, and if we turn that over to the state, they will have the state's indoctrination. It is foolish to expect that our children will be able to withstand the day-in, day-out reinforcement of morality alien to our own.

Ignatius,
My kids attend a private Lutheran-run Christian school. I have never encountered a lesbian/gay person there. But echoing others, I think your child is too young to "get it" yet. If the curriculum is solid and there is no agenda rammed down their throats, I'd ignore it. But eventually ALL kids are going to run into the gay thing. We will, as Orthodox Christians, confront it and explain to our children that it's wrong, a disordered lifestyle, contrary to Scripture and the Church's teachings, and a dangerous plague on our national and global morality.

At school my daughter mentioned one time that some parent was single and living with a man. We talked about how it was sinful (although nothing sexual was mentioned OBVIOUSLY!), and my daughter now just cringes at the mere mention of people having children and not being married.

While I tend to agree with the "avoid the occasion of sin" (sorry, the old Roman Catholic in me!) admonition Rusmeister throws out, I disagree with his pessimism that human beings can't survive indoctrination attempts. It's cynical and I think it paints a scenario in which human beings are so utterly weak and pathetic that their parents' teachings, the teachings of the Church, the Bible, and their faith life will quickly melt to pools of butter in the wake of secular brainwashing. I humbly disagree. Most of the kids at my parish are in public education and they detest such things and are awesome Orthodox Christians who take their faith seriously.

Now, California recently mandated that we teach homosexual heroes and gay advocates and other LGBT folk heroes from history in the classroom. That is set to kick in in two years or so. Several of us have already said we will refuse to comply. I know I will. I will conveniently "forget" to teach it until I am caught. When I am caught and held to the fire and compelled, I will refuse and evidently my educator career will be in full swan song mode in public education....

But at this point, I think our kids need at least some "real life" exposure to these things so we can confront them, shoot these ideaologies down, and show our kids the way. When the full-on gay agenda becomes mandatory in the classroom, at that point I'd most definitely pull out my child and place them in private school, home schooling, or some other arrangement.

These things are complicated, and we can't go throwing out charges of idiocy or bad parenting or foolishness at parents who make different choices than we've made. I hope, prayerfully, the Lord will guide you Ignatius. Best of luck, brother.

I would agree with what choirfiend says. it kinda reminds me of the closing monologue from Mrs Doubtfire.

Question

And how would you explain that if it happened in their own family ? E.g. one of the parents wants to live with someone else who is the same sex ? What if the children will ask ??
