NFL's new safety net failed to catch Belcher

An NFL crisis hotline, a bolstered mental-health program and a fresh message encouraging troubled players to seek help did not prevent the murder-suicide involving Jovan Belcher, the Kansas City Chiefs linebacker. Belcher, 25, shot his girlfriend and then killed himself.

EKO 2012: TEAM DELTA COACH WANTS TO ... - Complete Sports

Team Delta Swimming Coach,Mr Aigbe Monday, has boasted that his primary target is to retain their top swimming position at the 18th National Sports Festival.

Aigbe admitted that there are stiff competitions from other states, he pointed out that Delta swimmers are determined to win medals at the festival with particular emphasis on retaining their swimming title.

?We are here to retain our swimming position. Yes, other states will be out to challenge us but that will give us extra motivation to win?, he said.

Delta State is currently top on the overall medals table as the Eko 2012 enters day eight today.

OGUN BOXING COACH UNHAPPY WITH MATERIALS

Technical adviser of Ogun state boxing team, Aremu Ajani has expressed dismay over what he described as low quality of boxing materials provided by the host at the on-going Eko 2012 Games.

The former national boxer said officials of boxing accepted boxing gloves and head guides provided by the host state to avoid confusion.

??Any person that knows about the game of boxing will tell you that these boxing gloves and head guides provided for this competition are not the ideal quality.

?They are supposed to be for training. The AIBA recommended boxing gloves and head guides for competitions are red and blue but we just decided to let the sleeping dog lie because we do not want any thing that will bring bad name to this state.

?This is not the first time we are going to National Sports Festivals. No doubt that those who bought these materials are not professionals, they should have allowed those who know the game to purchase the material?, coach Aremu said.

He hinted that Ogun state boxers are doing their best, adding that their target is to win as many as eight medals in boxing.

?We are doing our very best. We came into this competition with a total of 20 boxers, 10 male, 10 female.
?And out of this numbers, I?m very sure that 10 of them will win medals for us. And you know also that we have instant package for any athlete that wins medal.

YOLA WARNS CHEATS

The secretary of the main organizing committee of the 18th national sports festival Alhaji Abba Yola has warned of dire consequences for states who indulge in any form of cheating by flouting the rules of the festival.

Yola,s warning is coming on the heels of the discovery that Anambra state had fielded a foreign athlete who has being striped of his medal.'We are aware of some challenges which are not as complex as experienced in Rivers, but we are gradually coming out of these problems. However, any state found to have broken the rules of the festival will be heavily sanctioned. Already, one athlete from Anambra was stripped of his medal because he was found to be ineligible.

Ondo State hockey team was sanctioned for breaking the rules of the game. The medal won in Judo by Lagos state is hanging pending the outcome of the protest lodged against them by Niger state. States must be sincere in the identification of athletes.

The MOC cannot be sure of the identities of all the athletes except the states do their home work.He commended the Deputy Governor of Lagos state Princess Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire for her comittment to ensuring a hitch free event..

CYCLING HAS GIVEN ME FAME

Durogbade Adejoke Excited Over Double Gold Medal Feat Gold medalist Durogbade Adejoke is the toast of Team Oyo and the Oyo State as a whole after her golden feat in Cycling event of the ongoing National Sports Festival holding in Lagos.

Adejoke won 2 gold medals and a silver in 200 metres, 1500 metres and 500 meters respectively.

The 200 level student of Sports and Recreation Management SRM from Leeds City University, Ibadan, Adejoke described her cycling feat as an act of God and will be forever grateful to God and Mr. Adewale Gbadebo who drafted her from football to cycling.

?I was a footballer and my goal then was to make something for myself in the game. But on the eve of the last Sports Festival in Port-Harcourt, my chairman then, Mr. Adewale Gbadebo, asked me if I can ride a bicycle which I answered in the affirmative. So, he asked me to join the cycling team because there are few women in the game then."

?I started and I thank God I won a silver medal at the City Garden games. I was rewarded with the sum of? N300,000 by the governor Ajumobi and immediately I decided to concentrate on the sport. I thank God that He has rewarded my hard work with 2 gold medals and a silver medal.

?I registered for four events, winning three medals and I hope to complete the full sweep of medals with another one in the team event,? she said.

Adejoke was born in Ilesa and she started a playing career as a normal street child before ending up with Nito Queens of Ibadan from where she changed to cycling.

When asked whether she will go back to football in the future, she categorically says no.

?I am not going back to football because since I have been playing football, I have not achieved as much as I do in cycling. So, my aim now is to concentrate more on the game and make a living out of it,? she promised.

OKARO ASSURES OF PROMPT DECISION ON PROTESTS

All outstanding protests will be promptly attended to so as not to affect the overall medals standing
According to the chairman of the games general services General Emmanuel okaro, we have received alot of protests and we are attending to them promptly so that it does not affect the overall table.

Also, we have resolved to update the medals table twice daily to forestall any conffusion. on security, we are very sorry for the way some soldiers have misbehaved, but it would not happen again.

I already spoke with the officer in charge and he gave me his word that they will be called to order.

NBF PICK ANAMBRA BOXER

Nigeria Boxing Federation, NBF has picked Team Anambra boxer, Sebastine Uche despite the pugilist losing out to his Team Ondo counterpart in the on-going 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos.

Uche who fought in the 67kg for men, was selected for what the NBF officials described as his impressive boxing skills.

An obviously elated Uche told Complete Sports that his only regret was losing the fight to his Ondo opponent as well as not having quality equipment to train with in Anambra prior to Eko 2012 Games.

?This is my first time of fighting in such a competition like the National Sports Festival?, Uche said.

??I?m happy with my performance because I did not train enough coming to the festival but then it was sad to lose to my opponent?.

?My dream is to become a professional boxer. I have always wanted to be a boxer and thank God that I have the opportunity now. All I want to ask for is support from our state government.

?I promise that with the opportunity of being part of the national boxing team, I will make Nigeria proud?, he said.

Meanwhile, head coach of Team Anambra boxing team, Innocent Nwokocha has disclosed that six of his boxers have reached the quarter final stage of the boxing event, saying that has shot them to the medal spot of the event.

NFF SHIFTS SEMI FINAL MATCHES TO AGEGE STADIUM

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has shifted all the semi-final matches of the football event to Agege Stadium.

According to Olusola Ogunnowo a member of the management staff of the federation, all participating teams in the ongoing festival football event should note that the male football semi-final matches earlier scheduled to hold at Onikan Stadium has been moved to Agege Stadium.

The venues and facilities committee of the on-going 18th National Sports Festival has been castigated over the poor state of Onikan Stadium, Lagos, one of the venues of the football event of the festival.

According to an official of one of the states participating in the football event and who did not want is name in print, Onikan stadium surface is not good at all for the game of football.

?This is not a football pitch at all- but maybe a horse racing arena. How are we expecting the players to be at their best playing on this kind of pitch.

?I learnt that about N1m is used to re-grass this pitch and if that is true, then the person in charge should be asked questions,? he said.

?Most times, we complain about the quality of play by the players, but how can you expect them to give their best on this kind of pitch? This is not good for a state like Lagos with the best serving governor Babatunde Fashola?, he said.

A football fan Akinola Bamidele said that the stadium is even worse than the way it was before the so-called renovation work commenced ahead of the festival.

NSF BOSS EXPLAINS DELAY IN SWIMMING START

Swimming event finally got underway yesterday at the Swimming Pool of the Teslim Balogun Stadium after the event suffered several postponements.

President of the Nigeria Swimming Federation, Babatunde Fatayi Williams explained to Complete Sports why the event started behind schedule.

Williams stated that the board of the NSF had to take the decision to shift the commencement of the event till Monday (yesterday) when it was discovered that there was excess chlorine in the water.

Williams further explained that when water was filled in the pool from the mains and from tankers, it was discovered that the water contained much iron and as a result of that, excess chlorine was poured in the water to neutralize the iron content of the water.

?But unfortunately the chlorine was discovered to have been too much and in order to correct it we had to delay the commencement of the event?, he added.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM RIVERS COACH WANTS TO SHOCK LAGOS

Rivers Volleyball coach, O?Harry has boasted he will shock their Team Lagos counterpart as the event enters the semi final stage today.

O?Harry whose team eliminated their Gombe counterparts in the quarter finals on Monday to set up a semi final confrontation with Lagos boasted he won?t wait for the clash with the host state.

"I am happy that my pledge to the people of Rivers State of the two gold medals in Volleyball is still feasible.

?Our two teams (male and female) have qualified for the semi-finals. But it is the clash against Lagos that I can't wait for because I want to humble them before their fans?, he boasted.

Does anyone here know about Etalon calipers?
  1. I just found one very nice caliper and I think it may be rather valuable as far as calipers go

  2. I found the long island indicator service inc. also. They say they do not carry one as large as mine. Mine is a 21" verneer with fine adjustments. its pretty beefy and is a full 1/4" thick. Seeing 6" is over $150 I wonder what mine is worth? the LIIS inc did comment it was quite a find and that etalon was considered the cream of the crop.

5 Overhyped Mars Discoveries

NASA has been trying to dampen expectations for an upcoming Mars announcement after rumors abounded that the agency's Curiosity rover discovered something big.

"Rumors and speculation?that there are major new findings from the mission at this early stage are incorrect," NASA officials wrote in a statement on Thursday (Nov. 29). "The news conference will be an update about first use of the rover's full array of analytical instruments to investigate a drift of sandy soil."

The announcement will be made at the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco on Monday (Dec. 3).

In light of this latest saga, we took a look back at the five most overhyped Mars discoveries in years past.

1. Canals on Mars

One of the most famous, and famously wrong, discoveries about our neighboring planet was the 1870s claim that canals had been dug into the Martian crust, thus "proving" the existence of life on Mars. Prominent astronomer Percival Lowell popularized the canal theory, based on the notion that Mars was once green and wet, but had lately been drying out, so the Martians had engineered canals to route water down from the planet's polar ice caps. [The Search for Life on Mars (Photo Timeline)]

Historians say the canal frenzy was boosted by the widespread excitement over the construction of the Suez Canal, an engineering marvel that was completed in 1869.

The idea of canals on Mars persisted well into the 20th century, until observation technologies were advanced enough to reveal the canals as an optical illusion.

2. Flowing water on Mars

On June 22, 2000, NASA announced it had found evidence for liquid water currently flowing on the surface of Mars. The news, based on photos of gullies etched across the Martian surface taken by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor, made a big splash. The gullies seemed to have been formed by flowing water, and debris and mud deposits nearby suggested liquid water as well. What's more, researchers at the time judged the structures to be freshly formed, implying that liquid water exists on Mars today.

However, in the more than 10 years since the announcement, scientists have yet to confirm the gullies are caused by flowing water, or offer definitive proof of water on Mars today. While experts mostly agree that water ran over Mars' surface in the ancient past, there is lingering disagreement over the present day.

3. Face on Mars

A black-and-white photo of Mars taken by NASA's Viking 1 orbiter in 1976 quickly captivated the public because it revealed an eerie likeness of a human face on the planet's surface. Although NASA scientists just as quickly judged it to be a naturally occurring outcropping of rock, accentuated by light and shadow, many people searched for a deeper explanation. Some fixed on the idea that the formation was constructed by an alien civilization, and looked for further signs of a crumbling extraterrestrial city in the region.

The "face on Mars" has been imaged in higher resolution by subsequent NASA missions, which have bolstered the optical illusion explanation. Still, the uncanny allure of the structure has never totally faded. [Photos: The 'Face on?Mars' and Other Illusions]

4. Mysterious meteorite

A small piece of Mars landed in Antarctica about 13,000 years ago in the form of meteorite, which was discovered in 1984 and called ALH84001. This rock was subsequently found to contain a mineral called magnetite, which on Earth is associated with the presence of microorganisms.?Carbonate materials in the meteorite also indicate that liquid water was present when it formed, at least 16 million years ago.

Taken together, some construed these findings as evidence that Mars once had microbial life. However, most scientists caution that the magnetite may not have a biological connection, and that the rock doesn't offer any solid proof. Additionally, claims that small structures inside the meteorite appear to be fossilized nanobacteria have met with skepticism, and stirred more controversy.

5. Microbes on Mars

NASA's first-to-Mars landers, Viking 1 and 2, which touched down on the Red Planet in 1976, were sent explicitly to look for life. One experiment did appear to find evidence for metabolic reactions, which its leaders announced as proof of life on Mars. The claim was big news, but many other scientists rejected the life interpretation, suggesting instead that the reactions were caused by nonliving agents in the Martian dirt.

In the ensuing years, the Viking life-detection experimenters Gilbert Levin and?Patricia Ann Straat have stood by their claims, but no rock-solid evidence for microbes on Mars has ever been found.

How Using an Autoresponder Can Help You Boost Your Online ...

Most internet marketing professionals know how powerful autoresponders are when it comes to building an online business. When you use an autoresponder, your emails go out automatically and you can reach the maximum benefits of those emails with minimal work. They are like having an assistant who works just for you and who sends out your emails for you, and you don?t have to do a thing but set the system up. However, maximizing your effects from autoresponders requires learning the proper steps to take. Being creative here is important because ultimately what matters is how you?re getting out of your efforts. The following three techniques will help you reach your target audience with your autoresponders.

1. One great idea is to provide a class that your subscribers must pay for. That?s right, as this technique has been utilized by many successful individuals like Joe Vitale, who has used this technique to provide an e-course that he charged money for, and he used nothing more than an autoresponder service. This class will offer knowledge in a way that?s distributed to students through the autoresponder. The autoresponder makes everything automatic because you will have previously written the e-class and programmed it into the service to be sent out as you prefer. When your customers have paid, you can then send out each lesson to them regularly by sending emails. It?s not even necessary to put all the content into the email, as you can include links that can take your prospects to videos, audio, etc.

2. Another good idea is to send out free reports that are tailored specifically towards your target market. People have no problem downloading a report that?s free and that provides information they can put to use right away. A simple ten to fifteen page report that offers true value is all you need. You first ask for their email address if you don?t have them and deliver your opening report and once they opt in, you can sequentially deliver the rest of the reports to them through the autoresponder. These reports can easily spread around when your subscribers give them away to their friends and website visitors, which will automatically bring you viral traffic. The more reports you create and give to your subscribers, the more of a chance you?ll have of getting even more traffic.

3. Another good idea is to offer free trials of any products you?re offering to your prospects, and then you can send out instructions for that free trial using your autoresponder. Once the free trial has ended, you will be able to follow up with your prospects to close the sale since you now have their email address. This is one of the easiest way to convert a customer, so go ahead and try it.

You should now see just how easy autoresponders make email marketing, and how useful the services are for expanding online businesses quickly. Let?s face facts, internet marketing isn?t as easy as everyone makes it out to be, and so you should try to make everything as automated as you can. Autoresponders have assisted the best internet marketers in reaching the tops of their industries, and you can get there to if you use them while thinking creatively. The tips that we discussed in this article are simple to apply and can really help you make your whole email list building easy.

If you have been trying to see through satellitedirect really stop for a moment! You shouldn?t be too hard on yourself. Rule number one is to not push yourself way too hard.

HBT: Cubs sign Japanese reliever Fujikawa

UPDATE: Rosenthal reports that Fujikawa is guaranteed $9.5 million as part of his deal with the Cubs. That?s a pretty nice chunk of change for a rebuilding team to give to a closer, especially one who has never pitched in the United States, but the Cubs are obviously confident he can make an impact in the late innings.

Fujikama will receive a $1 million signing bonus and salaries of $4 million for 2013 and 2014. The vesting option for 2015 is worth $5.5 million and could increase to $6 million based on games finished. If the option doesn?t vest, the Cubs hold a $5.5 million club option that can be bought out for $500,000.

4:50 PM: We heard last night that the Angels were considered the front-runners to land Japanese reliever Kyuji Fujikawa. But it turns out he?ll be headed elsewhere.

According to FOX Sports? Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs have an agreement in place with Fujikawa. No word yet on the terms involved, but Rosenthal hears that the 32-year-old right-hander will get a two-year deal with a vesting option for a third.

Fujikawa is coming off a dominant run in Japan in which he posted a 1.36 ERA and 202 saves over the past six seasons with the Hanshin Tigers. Armed with a low-90s fastball, a slider and a forkball, he had a 1.32 ERA and 58/15 K/BB ratio over 47 2/3 innings this past season.

Rosenthal notes that?Fujikawa will likely be used as the Cubs? closer, so Carlos Marmol figures to be on the trade block in the coming days and weeks. The 30-year-old right-hander is owed $9.8 million next season and is due to hit free agency next offseason. He was nearly traded to the Angels last month for Dan Haren, but the deal reportedly fell apart due to concerns over Haren?s medicals.

Once you have attracted visitors to your website, encourage them to click on your affiliate link (s). People not hooked on fish could get their omega-3 through new dairy products, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Not everyone has a taste for fish, even though it is a natural source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

And while a growing number of omega-3 enriched foods may net health benefits for people who resist the lure of salmon or sashimi, milk remains the product that has gotten away in what has become a billion-dollar health industry.

But now, food science researchers at Virginia Tech may have reeled milk into the omega-3 delivery system, showing it is possible to incorporate fish oil into milk and dairy-based beverages in amounts sufficient to promote heart health, without destroying the product's taste or limiting its lifespan.

Even better, the milk passes the sniff test. Twenty-five volunteers evaluated one-ounce cups of standard 2 percent milk alongside samples of skim milk containing 78 parts butter oil to 22 parts fish oil in institutionally approved study conditions.

"We couldn't find any aroma differences," said Susan E. Duncan, a professor of food science and technology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. "We were concerned the fish oil would undergo a chemical process called oxidation, which would shorten the milk's shelf life, or the milk would acquire a cardboard or paint flavor by reacting with the fish oil. It appears we have a product that is stable, with no chemical taste or smell issues."

The study, featured in the November issue of the Journal of Dairy Science, tested four different ratios of butter oil to fish oil in the production of pasteurized, fatty acid-fortified beverages.

The aroma-free formulation delivered 432 milligrams of heart-healthy fatty acids per cup, close to the 500 milligram daily target for healthy people suggested by a broad range of health studies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests daily consumption of 250 milligrams per day in healthy adults.

Research has shown omega-3 fatty acids are helpful for preventing coronary disease, reducing inflammation, assisting infant brain development, and maintaining brain function.

Meanwhile, the American Heart Association recommends eating two servings of fatty fish per week, citing research that has shown omega-3 fatty acids decrease the risk of potentially fatal heart arrhythmias, decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth of atherosclerotic plaque, and slightly lower blood pressure.

But fish hasn't caught on with everyone, making room for new foods and beverages fortified with omega-3s in an expanding marketplace. Sales are expected to reach more than $3 billion in 2016, according to marketing analysts.

"I think the dairy industry can look at our study and determine whether it is plausible to modify its products," Duncan said. "I would like to help people who love milk, yogurt, and dairy, which have intrinsic nutritional value, address an additional need in their diets, especially if they don't like to eat fish or can't afford it. One of these dairy servings a day apparently is enough to sustain enough continuous omega-3 to benefit heart health."

If such a product catches on with consumers, Duncan said the next step for researchers is to follow groups of volunteers in an epidemiological study of whether the food improves health outcomes.

"Milk was first fortified with Vitamin D as a way to fight rickets -- a disease that leads to soft or weak bones," said Kerry E. Kaylegian, a dairy foods research and extension associate with Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, who was not involved in the research. "It was a good approach to address a dietary deficiency disease, because so many people drink milk, which is already loaded with nutrients. This study describes fortification of milk with omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. We can't say lack of those compounds definitively causes cardiac disease, but there is evidence that they protect us and contribute to heart and brain health. Milk would be a good delivery vehicle for those nutrients."

10 Tips For Travel Insurance | Felicity Hutchison: Travel Advisory ...

Have you ever Googled ?Travel Insurance?? I just did and I got something like 229,000,000 hits in 0.38 of a second! If you have heaps of time on your hands you may be able to wade through all these pages and find the one that best suits your needs is on page 1,546! But the reality is, most of us do not.

This snap from ?The Australian? says it all

Many websites have search engines embedded in their home page, so shopping around is pretty easy. You can use ?Get a Quote? and in a matter of another nano second you have a good selection to read through. Think carefully about your needs as you only want to pay for what you will use in the policy, for the duration of your trip. There are basics like, luggage loss, sickness, cancellation fees that affect us all, but there can be savings if you read the fine print, and choose carefully.

Trip Advisor have a great forum that has many discussion threads about travel insurance companies and who pays up (and who doesn?t), so have a quick look there to help you decide once you have narrowed down your choices.

My suggestions are as follows and please feel free to add your two bobs worth if you have found one to be really reliable and actually PAY, should the need arise.

1. Check the Excess you will need to pay if you make a claim. The higher it is, the cheaper your policy becomes. Just like any other insurance.

2. Make sure you have a reputable underwriter for the policy.

3. Cover for laptops, iPads, cameras etc are sometimes not included in policy and can be exclusions and you may be required to pay an additional premium

4. You may find some categories are irrelevant for you so read and choose carefully.

5. Read the reviews other users have written about that company, either on their site or in travel forums. Lonely Planet?s Thorntree Forum is a treasure trove for this and anything!

6. The Australian Government?s Smart Traveller website is a handy reference to cross check you have covered all bases

7. Check that it covers the countries you are going to visit

8. Make sure you disclose any pre-existing medical conditions

9. If you are planning a bungie jump in New Zealand, this may require an additional premium, so double check that with your insurer.

10. Some banks will provide Travel Insurance free as part of their credit card service. You may be lucky, but make sure it is a good fit for you.

The Insurance Council is also full of great information that could help you.

But just remember, you need peace of mind when you travel, so not having insurance is not an option! If you don?t believe me, read my lovely friend Mary Lou?s Wheel Chair Bound in New York City back in July?then you will!

Send this to any of your friends whom you think may be a little accident prone!!

Safe and Happy Travels!

EE increases data caps for 4G mobile broadband plans, introduces SIM-only 30-day option

Android Central

EE, the UK's only 4G LTE mobile network, has announced that it's increasing the amount of data available to its mobile broadband customers -- that's anyone using one of EE's data-only plans with a compatible device.

Customers on a 2GB allowance will see that increased to 3GB, 3GB users will get bumped up to 5GB, and 5GB customers will have their data cap increased all the way to 8GB. Monthly fees will remain the same.

EE is also launching a SIM-only data-only plan on a rolling 30-day contract, which offers 5GB for £15.99 per month. EE doesn't currently sell any 4G-capable Android tablets, but if you've already picked one up (and it supposed LTE on 1800MHz), you'll be able to use it with this new price plan. To sweeten the deal, EE says the first month of service will be free for those signing up before Dec. 23.

Unfortunately the new price plans don't extend to EE's smartphone SIMs, which require a minimum commitment of 12 months on SIM-only, or 24 months if you include a phone.

More details in the presser after the break.

Notre Dame football: Kelly mining more California gold

Brian Kelly had more work to do in southern California after beating USC on Saturday night. So Notre Dame's head coach stayed in The Golden State through the weekend and found himself in a high school gym on Monday night. Mission Viejo senior Max Redfield, one of Notre Dame?s top remaining targets in the 2013 class, scored 20 points with Kelly and wide receivers coach Mike Denbrock in attendance of his second basketball game of the season.

Redfield said he didn?t get to talk with the coaches too much, because he was busy preparing for and playing in a 91-33 win over North Torrance. But Kelly and Denbrock did visit with Redfield?s mother, stepdad and younger brother before the game.

?My mom said that she liked them both a lot and could tell that they?re really genuine and nice guys,? Redfield said.

?They reiterated all the things that I?d be getting if I went there and how I?d be involved with the team and where I fit in. My parents were pretty impressed.?

Redfield officially visited Notre Dame in October for the Stanford game with a verbal commitment to USC, and has since rescinded his commitment and turned his attention to the Irish, Washington and Oregon.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound prospect visited Washington on Nov. 9 and has yet to set a visit to Oregon.

Since Redfield visited South Bend the Irish have all but secured a spot in the BCS National Championship with an undefeated regular season capped by a victory over the school Redfield was initially committed to. Redfield said the winning has helped Notre Dame a little and he still considers them at the top of his list.

?If I had a number one,? Redfield said, ?it would be Notre Dame.?

Redfield ranks as a four-star prospect with most recruiting services slating him as a top five safety and a top 50 player overall.

Greek debt deal turns hedge fund trade to gold

Posted: athenswire

November 28, 2012

By Tommy Wilkes and Laurence Fletcher

LONDON (Reuters) ? For a few hedge funds, Greek debt is turning into one of the trades of the year.

News that Athens ? backed by euro zone ministers and the International Monetary Fund ? will buy back some its own debt from private investors sets a floor under the price of its bonds, handing many who picked them up at rock-bottom levels big gains.

The funds ? which include Daniel Loeb?s Third Point ? have spent months building up positions in the debt-beleaguered country?s bonds, rightly betting that their price would rise as the risk of a Greek exit from the euro zone receded.

Some have already banked profits from that bet, but indications Athens will target a cost of around 35 cents on the euro in its buyback plan, if successful, is a boon for those still holding the bonds.

?This is very positive and a huge step forward,? Achilles Risvas, chief executive officer of hedge fund Dromeus Capital said. ?The probability of a Grexit has decreased significantly.?

Risvas owns Greek bonds currently trading at 28.5 cents on the euro, bonds he bought at 18 and 19 cents.

Hedge funds ? secretive funds that can bet on rising or falling prices in a wide range of markets ? have often played a controversial role in government bond markets.

Many have attracted criticism for betting against the fortunes of European countries ? including Greece ? during the euro zone debt crisis, and prompting Europe to ban ?naked? short-selling of sovereign credit default swaps (CDS), a product that insures the buyer against default.

For most funds their current Greek debt holdings represent a relatively small position of their portfolios, although the gains can be large.

Others are sitting on even bigger gains.

Third Point, a $9.3 billion hedge fund run out of New York, said in a regulatory statement earlier this month Greek government bonds were one of its top five ?Winners? in October.

The fund had bought the bonds for about 17 cents, Loeb told investors in an October 3 letter seen by Reuters.

London-based hedge fund Adelante Asset Management first bought Greek bonds at 12.5 cents. It has sold part of the position, making a 70 percent gain, but CEO Julian Adams said it still has a holding and described the deal as a ?good? one.

Adams said the trade was by no means over. ?Now the country has a chance to go forward on a more sustainable footing? Plus with all the relief they are getting and the cash you should start to get some growth.?

POKER GAME

Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreed on Monday to cut Greece?s towering debt pile by 40 billion euros ($51.72 billion), cutting it to 124 percent of gross domestic product by 2020.

Importantly, ministers also committed to taking further steps to lower Greece?s debt ?significantly below 110 percent? in 2022 ? a veiled acknowledgment that some write-off of loans may be necessary from 2016.

Athens is yet to give details of the debt buyback ? to avoid giving hedge funds an opportunity to push up prices ? but one proposal is to borrow 10 billion euros from the euro zone?s rescue fund.

This would allow Greece to buy around 30 billion euros worth of bonds, cutting its outstanding obligations by around 20 billion euros.

However, the buyback will only work if enough investors agree to sell their bonds ? by no means guaranteed. Some may prefer to stay out of the deal in the hope that others accept the buyback, cutting Greece?s debt and boosting the value of their own bonds.

?Every bondholder will be aware that if they were the only one not to participate then default probabilities plummet, and we think the strip could be valued at around 50 (cents on the euro),? Gabriel Sterne, an economist at Exotix, wrote in a research note.

Dromeus? Risvas said a price of 35 cents was unlikely to encourage him to participate, but that the plan was still positive because it sets a floor to the price and ? depending on the buyback?s size ? it could boost bond prices further.

?It?s like a poker game. You need to understand what everyone else is going to do first,? he said, noting that much depends on how the government proceeds with the buyback.

Using a Dutch auction ? where the price is set after taking in all bids and determining the highest price at which enough investors accept a total buyback ? is likely to elicit more success than a single across-the-board price, Risvas said.

But while markets and hedge funds reacted positively to the plan, huge risks remain and mainstream investors are still cautious about buying into the debt of a country stuck in the depths of a five year long recession.

?You can flip a coin and you might make some money. But other than for hedge funds?it?s very difficult for us to play it,? said Richard Cookson, Global Chief Investment Officer at Citi Private Bank, speaking at Reuters Global Investment 2013 Outlook Summit held in London on Tuesday. Use Leftover Cranberry Sauce for Cocktails

Use Leftover Cranberry Sauce for CocktailsUse Leftover Cranberry Sauce for Cocktails If you still have some Thanksgiving leftovers lurking about your fridge, it's time to get creative and use them up. If cranberry sauce is among those leftovers, the folks at CHOW have a creative use for it: use it in a tasty cocktail you can sip while you figure out what to do with the rest of the leftovers.

The video above walks you through the recipe. It's pretty straight forward, and while the cranberry sauce CHOW uses is clearly of the canned, gelatinous variety, we imagine you can do the same with any cranberry sauce, even homemade, as long as it's smooth enough to mix easily. If it's chunky leftover cranberry sauce you're trying to get rid up, a quick hit with an immersion blender (or even a regular blender) should smooth it out enough to give this a whirl.
